RATEBROOMER

Un investigador del siglo XXI (AaronHz), Thursday, 17 February 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Dear latebloomer,

How has early exposure to the film Cocktail influenced the person you are today?

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Thursday, 17 February 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Dear Sonny,

I never saw the movie itself in its entirety, but the Cocktail soundtrack has indeed vastly shaped my psyche, track by riveting track.

1. Wild Again - Starship

Because of this song, I always know to treasure my youth and the quest for fun.

2. Powerful Stuff - The Fabulous Thunderbirds

"She walks down the street a-knockin' 'em dead
Store window dummies even turn their heads
Sho' 'nuff, powerful stuff
When I saw her I burned my black book
Made a blind man take a second look
Sho' 'nuff I think I'm in love and thats Powerful Stuff

Naugahide skirt, black stacked heels
Red copper hair, dig the wig it's unreal
Sho' 'nuff, powerful stuff
Ole man Atlas holding up the world
He'd drop everything for that girl
Sho' 'nuff. I think I'm in love and it's Powerful Stuff

Her hip shakin' whip snakin' cooked my goose
I tell you that babe shes a fine papoose.
I love her mind, but here's the deal
She's got the kind of girl who rides the manmobile

She opens her eyes and turns on the juice
Pullin' like a magnet and she don't turn loose
Sho' 'nuff, powerful stuff
When she starts rockin'
Dont touch that dial
She's a hundred-mega-kilowatt
Woman child
Sho' 'nuff I think I'm in love
Think I'm in love-I think im in love
And that's powerful stuff"

Being exposed to this song led to my heterosexuality. I would've been totally gay if it wasn't for this song (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

3. Since When - Robbie Nevil

I am very absent minded and forgetful, and it's this songs fault!

4. Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin

I learned the healing power of denial and willful ignorance from this song.

5. Hippy Hippy Shake - The Georgia Satellites

I believe the "hippy hippy shake" is a reference to the children of the 60's whose incessant drug use led to nervous disorders. This served as a cautionary tale for myself as a youngster.

6. Kokomo - The Beach Boys

This song formed the basis of my avoidant, escapist tendencies.

7. Rave On - John Mellencamp

Many years after first hearing this I learned that it was a cover of a Buddy Holly song, and not a rockin' Mellencamp original. Illusions were shattered, and a part of me died. But I learned a lesson about never taking your assumptions for granted.

8. All Shook Up - Ry Cooder

I already knew this was an Elvis song, so my precious little world hadn't been rocked yet (still, it was disconcerting to see it enacted in a "Happy Days" episode once). The balming effect of Mr. Cooder's rendition, however, helped me deal with the pressures of long car trips with my siblings.

9. Oh, I Love You So - Preston Smith

I always imagined the Dunkin Donuts guy singing this. In a hawaian shirt. I always confused him with the Micromachines guy, too. I was a weird kid.

10. Tutti Frutti - Little Richard

I learned to distrust Pat Boone from this song!

So, as you can see, the Cocktail soundtrack has greatly influenced who I am today.

Hope that answered your question!

dear latebloomer,

so I went and saw 'naked lunch' and now i wonder if cronenberg takes things wayyyy too seriously & is not really all that good. am i wrong?

cheers
-d g

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 15 April 2006 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

dear DG

well, i like Naked Lunch. it's not his best, i suppose. and i can't compare it to the book, which i haven't read. but i really dont think he takes stuff too seriously at all! there is a rather grim seriousness to the underlying story of NL, being that the film is about addiction and and guilt. but i'd say there's plenty of humor, though its not smirky, wink-wink humor. its more out of the characters and the absurdity of the situations the protagonist finds himself in.

i mean...typewriters with anuses begging for bug powder?

Now with Crash you might have a case. That's an icy film even by Cronenberg's standards.

latebloomer: Ambassador With Training In Righteousness (latebloomer), Saturday, 15 April 2006 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

crash! yeah but the score is great. i saw it in the theater as part of a film series & then later I think, uh, outside of the realm of cahiers du cinema that's such a big WTF. I think I read somewhere he said there was no possible way to film it w/o taking it totally seriously.

ok maybe the problem with cronenberg for me now is when stuff like the typewriter shows up I just wanna say OH NO YOU DIDNT

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 15 April 2006 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

yeah crash has an incredible score, absolutely. howard shore rules.

i tend to love OTT shit like the anal bug typewriters, but that's me.

Cronenberg might be --- MIGHT BE --- the greatest director who ever lived. If it's not him it's Tarkovsky or Antonioni but he's right there.
