Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha. jon, i was trying to go w/a avant-funk sound rather than sounding exactly like ege bamyasi. i don't remember Three of a Perfect Pair as much as the other albums. is it way poppy?

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 17 February 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Alternate title for this thread: "Sounds like 'Pinch' and 'One More Night'."

How many of these suggestions actually sound like those two songs?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The first time I ever listened to Ege Bamyasi straight through I thought "Spoon" sounded like Led Zeppelin. Those keyboards put me in mind of the intros to "In the Evening" or "In the Light" or parts of "Caroulselambra" or something like that.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

but, you know, this was 1990 and I was 18 and Zep were still my favorite band of all-time, etc.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 17 February 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

TFUL282 sound like Can quite often, I have a thread devoted to this but I can't find it right now.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 18 February 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the track that Miles forced everyone in his band to listen to 10000000 times.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Friday, 18 February 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the drums are insanity. and dude was white!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 18 February 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This Heat "24 Track Loop" reminds me of an alternate universe version of Can circa EB.

24 Carat Black theme sounds like a Vitamin C ripoff but they were more or less released the same year and I'm not sure any of them heard of each other back then, just a happy coincidence probably:

GRATEFUL DEAD

brimstead, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 19:11 (nine years ago)

If you're going for Grateful Dead I'd recommend the longer jams between 68-74 where they really take off and aren't thinking of having to tie in to song structure overmuch. Just how the band itself interplays.
Also the track designated as feedback.

There's a James Brown compilation with the Collins Brothers line up that is probably as close as they get to sounding like Can. It's called Funk Power 1970 A Brand New Thang.

I got surprised by the Gene Vincent version of Summertime when I got it on a singles lp in the late 80s cos it sounded like it had arrived at the Can sound years early. Not specifically this era possibly.

Sun Ra in the space funk era from '78 to '83 or '84 has a number of points that could pass for Can
Those that don't are enjoyable enough anyway.

Savage Republic especially on Jamahiriya pass for a Krautrock band not sure if it's this era Can but I'd certainly point people in that direction if they enjoy this stuff.

Saqqara Dogs in places

Stevolende, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 20:01 (nine years ago)

I'd also chjeck out the long version of Do Your Thing from the Shaft soundtrack for near trance rock. Think I'd recommend it anyway.
But not sure fi it's been restored to the cd version since it got replaced at one point with the 2 minute single version.

The Cisco Kids version of War Live where all the long tracks are kept long is also worth looking at. Official version always had the songs cut up so that they would fit on vinyl sides.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 20:04 (nine years ago)

The A-Side of this kind of reminds me of Can: https://www.discogs.com/Food-Of-The-Gods-Boy-From-Brazil-Poison-Apple/release/1474763

brimstead, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 20:38 (nine years ago)

there's at least one Hayes compilation that has the full length "do your thing", can't remember the name
