tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Tony Hawk eat some wood once when he beefed a 720 method or something.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

which is your favorite:

squirrel bait LP
bitchmagnet release
bastro release
gastr del sol release
david grubbs "avant" release
david grubbs "pop" LP

????

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

which is your favorite:
squirrel bait LP

there's only one LP. But of the 3 things they released (EP, LP, 7"), I'll go with the EP.

bitchmagnet release

Ben Hur

bastro release

Bastro Diablo Guapo

gastr del sol release

either Mirror Repair or 20 Songs Less.

david grubbs "avant" release

only stuff he's re-issued by other people, although there were some okay moments when I saw him with Luc Ferrari.

david grubbs "pop" LP

none.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard any of these songs.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

we will change that at some point.

gygax! how 'bout your answers?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

which is your favorite:

squirrel bait release:

skag heaven

bitchmagnet release:

umber/starbooty twofer

bastro release:

sing the troubled beast

gastr del sol release

camofleur

david grubbs "avant" release

i'm not a huge fan of his solo avant stuff actually.

david grubbs "pop" LP

the spectrum between (i love this record, hated it at first and then KIZ taught me how great it was).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

some side trees:

first: there's the whole codeine/come thing that hstencil can elaborate on much better than i.

second: david grubbs played guitar in bitch magnet with soo young park who went on to form seam with his girlfriend lexi of the lillies (not to be confused with lilys/the lilys) and mac maccaughan of superchunk on drums, both of whom were replaced by bundy k. brown and john mcentire of bastro/shrimpboat/gastr del sol/sea and cake who later left seam to join tortoise and then bundy formed Pullman/Directions.

the only sort of thing here related to Squirrel Bait is that David Grubbs played a piano version of a Codeine song on the Barely Real EP. Other than that, there is no direct relation with either of those bands and SB.

David Grubbs only played guitar during some UK appearances as a last minute replacement for Jon Fine (who had to go to a wedding or something). He does not appear on any Bitch Magnet record.

h, grubbs is on the umber LP credits listed as playing guitar. i mentioned this to you before. is it an error?

wow! i'm surprised how quickly you forget, read what this dude wrote a couple weeks ago:

Bastro and Codeine, "Produkt" (from the Bastro and Codeine 7” on Sub-Pop) – Not a split single as some might assume, this release is actually Chicago-via-D.C.-via-Louisville’s Bastro playing together with NYC-via-Oberlin’s Codeine (see previous entry). Kind of a long b-side, but interesting as it merges the two disparate sounds of the participating bands (loud super-fast post-hardcore meets slow dirgey goodness).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I stand by what I wrote. Nobody from Squirrel Bait was in either of those bands.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, that's so weak! Tell JF to call me, I want to hear it first hand from his lips!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

don't you have some baseball stats to geek out over?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

only if you use that matmos quote again!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

you're more obsessive than funk, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

damn straight.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, get a room, you two.
