LEGEND OF THE RED DRAGON? IS THAT WHAT IT WAS CALLED?

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Friday, 18 February 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

god... what did i play back in those days?

here's a decent list of bigger games:

http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/games/rpg.htm

there's a lot missing there tho. no dnd games. i see no might and magic. a lot of console games are missing... of course, this is the dos discussion. i don't see the smaller, less successful games. (i know cause i played a few and i can't remember the names either.) also, the rogue/nethack/"Dungeons and Dragons" freeware games are under-repped... we use to play this one that was just labeled "Dungeons and Dragons"... and it was like *'s and 5's battling it out and shit.

google, help me out,
m.

I had Bard's Tale 3, but it was kind of a crappy game to start the series with.... :/

Fat Anarchy on Airtube (ex machina), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I MUST INSIST ON DARKLANDS. it had the big problem of being one of those rpgs that takes forever for you to be able to do anything interesting. but if u d/l it from underdogs it comes with a savegame editor. i wish it would get remade, it's totally brilliant.

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

-- first real time combat
-- first "from childhood" character creation system
-- first non-linear plot/quest setup
-- menu-based city interactions (instead of walking around the same locations a million times, i wish games still did this)
-- actual medieval christianity and cultural attitudes

not much fun at the outset tho.

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

this killed some hours... DND. (BASIC PLUS Source!)

http://dnd.lunaticsworld.com/default-frameset.html

darklands was really neat... even tho i had no idea what i was doing. i remember barging into castles to kill knights and stuff... or something. and some sort of pagan gathering. am i crazy? could you make potions? (all this stuff runs together.)

msp (msp), Friday, 18 February 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah that's darklands. the best is when you go into a village, and go to confession the village church. if the priest asks you to say prayers backwards or kill an animal, you ACCUSE THIS HAMLET OF SATANIC PRACTICES. then you fight them and burn it to the ground. seriously, a great game.

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 18 February 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

YES!! that was awesome! i totally remember that stuff.

I used to live on this java RPG Gemstone 3 which I think was only available on a primative version of AOL. That game fucking ruled.

greg ginn thought neubauten was bullshit, why don't you? (smile), Friday, 18 February 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

i remember using 100 hours of free aol with my girlfriend's credit card to play neverwinter nights the old version cheese version... yeah, let's see... it was not long after that where she started seeing other people... yeah, bad move msp. or not, we got fully back in and then broke up a year or two later. i shoulda saved myself the time and teleported the hell outta that shit when she wouldn't play magic the gathering. i shoulda known that was a sign. oh well.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 19 February 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Goddammit I wish that game was still around. Was it still all text? I think that was the charm of GS3.

greg ginn thought neubauten was bullshit, why don't you? (smile), Saturday, 19 February 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was all text. you can play dozens of games like that. get one zMUD and mudconnect.com or whatever.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 19 February 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

haha sweet. I'll have to look into that as it looks like I'm gonna beat GTA:SA by the end of the week.

Does anybody remember the original Prodigy network? There was some game on there, like 16 color graphix where you travelled through a maze and had to answer a bunch of riddles. I forget what it was called but it was gold.

greg ginn thought neubauten was bullshit, why don't you? (smile), Saturday, 19 February 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

THAT GAME WAS THE SHIT. I don't remember the name though, sadly.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 19 February 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I REMEMBER THERE WAS COMPLEX SHIT IN THERE LIKE FRACTIONS. I WAS SEVEN.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

hahah yeah. I was like 5. I would play that shit with my pops. Video game nostaligia is the best.

greg ginn thought neubauten was bullshit, why don't you? (smile), Saturday, 19 February 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)
