HSTENCIL STOP LISTENING TO "CLASSIC" INDIE ROCK BANDS

THE CODEINE CUT IS AWESOME, like all Codeine songs. But what makes that spectacular in particular is that it's FAST FOR THE LIKE FIRST FIVE SECONDS. Codeine NEVER played fast! But then they like FAKE YOU OUT with that one! GOOD SHIT!

also, Bitch Magnet, "White Piece of Toast" (I think that's the title) = awesome.

the only sort of thing here related to Squirrel Bait is that David Grubbs played a piano version of a Codeine song on the Barely Real EP. Other than that, there is no direct relation with either of those bands and SB.

second: david grubbs played guitar in bitch magnet with soo young park who went on to form seam with his girlfriend lexi of the lillies (not to be confused with lilys/the lilys) and mac maccaughan of superchunk on drums, both of whom were replaced by bundy k. brown and john mcentire of bastro/shrimpboat/gastr del sol/sea and cake who later left seam to join tortoise and then bundy formed Pullman/Directions.

David Grubbs only played guitar during some UK appearances as a last minute replacement for Jon Fine (who had to go to a wedding or something). He does not appear on any Bitch Magnet record.

I'll probably head out after one of the Slint shows, that's gonna be an expensive cab ride.

i love "classic" indie rock.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

NEVER, TIM YOU SWALLOWER-OF-HYPE!

btw, i like your blog.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Just a bit of fun. I never listened to a lot of these bands, actually.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

oh dude you missed out!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Live Skull were my favorite band in 1989. I saw them twice.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

its not about the indie, tim -- its about the Louisville connection.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I never saw Live Skull but I got a free copy of Positraction on cassette for subscribing to Asymptote zine! Anybody remember that? Kinda lame actually. They published a few good things, some Legs McNeil stuff I think, and some Jim Dickinson fiction or some shit like that.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

live skull were good, tho i don't have those records no more.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Damon Che = HUGE Live Skull fan.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Positraction is a fricking powerhouse,

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I have it on cassette, too, by the way! Buying used tapes used to be a very cheap way to get copies of albums for like three bucks.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 18 February 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if I even HAVE that cassette of it anymore, but yeah that record kills. I love "Riches House". I loved the cover. It made me think indie rock could be this world where I could go and get fucked up and take drugs and the music would take me places. A magic tunnel, you might even say!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 18 February 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

who up in this bitch is down with Nice Strong Arm??

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 18 February 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

i think i still have my nsa records.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 18 February 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

dusted was the last live skull i liked. but i loved the earlier stuff. and it's weird, cuz as much as i love come and thalia i always liked marnie as a vocalist better in live skull. like on the pusherman e.p. and cloud one. cloud one was the album for me in high school. along with all that other new york shit. marnie's bass on the live version of i was wrong that was on the speed trials comp fuckin' rulz.

They had a cheesier guitar sound on the earlier records, though. And I don't see how Marnie holds a candle to Thalia or how James Lo holds a candle to Rich Hutchins.

Positraction is a record I recommend absolutely.

from the carpark email news list:

The legendary Slint have asked Ariel Pink to open for them on their first reunion show in Louisville on February 22nd.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 19 February 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

we played on a dubble bill w codeine in 1994 in danbury and i was shocked at how threy got th drummer to play that slow..of course we were playing mid to fast at th time so all of it seemed slow..they humbled me w their ability to be controlled and beautiful and lo and behold a few yrs ago jon engle came to see us at a free 103.9 show in brooklyn as if time had never passed

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 19 February 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

LIVE SKULL SUX YER ALL OLDE.

ddb (ddb), Saturday, 19 February 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Youngsters think '79 is cool but not '89!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 19 February 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I think early Live Skull is not that great. Live Skull with THALIA ZEDEK, a good drummer, and Mark C. and Tom Paine switching to the fucking Marshall half stacks was ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS EVER.

Ian John50n (orion), Saturday, 19 February 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

To my recollection, Ian, that was a horrible band. (Saw them once at THE CHE CAFE. Was Gygax there?)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 19 February 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

steve imm3rwahr and j0n engle bought me drinx last night.
