Tomorrow's Parties warm-up show)
FIRE IN THE KITCHEN

WORLD WAR IX
NOWHERE FAST

From this week’s voice on fire in the kitchen:

“The first show in too many years by this tense, terse, acidically bright-burning team of guitar cultists (most active in the early '90s) who took a few cues about their bearing from Television and the Dead, but preferred speed to languor and sharply contained improvisation to sprawling jamminess.” (DOUGLAS WOLK)

THIS THURSDAY, MARCH 3:
Evol (Mego Records, Spain) - http://www.mego.at/evol.html, http://personal.ilimit.es/principio/
Ones (Brooklyn)
Carlos Giffoni + Chuck Bettis DEVASTATION DUO
“Evol is Roc and Miguel from Barcelona. One is obsessed with chocolate and the misuse of digital formats, the other one a devotee of disco, funk and any kind of black-roots sound. Why? No reason, really. No concepts behind it. And, no, Evol (the name) is not a tribute to Sonic Youth. Both do love them, but it is the name of a plant, a very common plant (so common that you cannot identify unless you're a plant expert). Scientific name: Sambucus Bulus. You cannot see it even when you're surrounded by them -- you hear it, but you may not realise it even if you're surrounded by their stupid clic-clic tracks. Cool. What? The sound is very minute but at the same time massive.” – MEGO

Ones - still waiting on some bio stuff but hey whatever dudes they're awesome.

Carlos Giffoni (http://www.monotract.com/carlos.html) has played with Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth, duh), Lee Renaldo (SY), Jim O’Rourke (SY), Nels Cline (Wilco!), Lasse Marhaug (Jazzkammer), Dylan Nyoukis (Daecar Pinga), and is a member of Monotract (http://www.monotract.com) and curator of the internationally renowned No Fun Fest (http://www.nofunfest.com/). Basically, he’s a busy guy. Chuck Bettis is also busy, playing with rad people like Carlos and Carly Ptak (Nautical Almanac) and solo, all over this great land of the free. Carlos and Chuck are the DEVASTATION DUO, dudes: http://www.pataphysics-lab.com/dotdotdot/archives/001540.html.

Ones is a Brooklyn duo presenting battery-powered spiritual soul jams for our time and others. Current performance techniques include cassette manipulations and derivations thereof (soldering, resoldering, breaking, attemping to fix, opening, rewinding, stopping, changing), with occasional interjections of acoustic instrumentation and room ambience ascertained by omni-directional recording devices. Past and future releases include: cassette on Palsy (out of print), CD (with Jeph Jerman) on White Tapes (available soon,
http://whitetapes.8m.com/), future releases everywhere TBA.

Carlos Giffoni (http://www.monotract.com/carlos.html) has played with Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth, duh), Lee Renaldo (SY), Jim O’Rourke (SY), Nels Cline (Wilco!), Lasse Marhaug (Jazzkammer), Dylan Nyoukis (Daecar Pinga), and is a member of Monotract

Cause Co-Motion (http://www.causecomotion.com)
One Long Lash (erica bricking (ex-drinking woman), tim barnes (silver jews, jim o'rourke, neil hagerty, etc.) duo)
The U-Bolts

You know Cause Co-Motion, New York’s most loved band of misanthropic rock sounds. The kids love them, you love them, come out and see them so you can say you saw them when.

Onelonglash is the new duo of husband-and-wife Erica Bricking and Tim Barnes. Discerning Louisville-o-philes know Erica from her stint in the legendary Drinking Woman, which also featured Tara Jane O’Neil (Rodan, Retsin, The Sonora Pine, Tara Jane O’Neil solo, etc.). Discerning indie-o-philes know Tim Barnes from his work behind the kit for Silver Jews, Jim O’Rourke, Neil Hagerty, Tower Recordings – and most recently with PG6 opening for SLINT. Also, he is quite the man about town in the improv scene, having played with damn near every one who’s anyone.

The U-Bolts are a brand-new band on the NY scene, nice and heavy, yet with supple guitar lines reminiscent of some bands that the Strokes don’t sound anything like.

JUST ADDED - Tuesday, March 29 – 9 PM, $5

Guilty Connector (Japan)
Kelly Churko
The Maestros
Sickness

GUILTY CONNECTOR: A hybrid human/noise-machine that creates noise-scapes of unfathomed depths. Banging hand-made noise generators aka "SHIBAKI Electronics" made of iron plates, he creates and liberates dazzling spectra of sounds, from ultra-fast extreme harsh barrages to meditative spacy sounds. Experience the roar of his live electronics with your own flesh.

Kelly Churko (MacIntosh G4, Kenaxis software) - Born in Moose Jaw, Canada, August 18th, 1977. Studied classical piano and traveled around Canada with the family band in childhood. Majored in jazz studies on guitar at Vancouver Community College 1994-1997. Currently based in Tokyo, Japan. Also a member of avant-jazz group Almost Transparent Blue and noise unit Hospital, both based in Vancouver, Canada. He has toured in Europe, Japan and the United States.

Sickness just played Siberia last week with Spencer Yeh/Pete Nolan, Hive Mind, the Seven Arts, Peter Kolovos and Jason Crumer – and he slayed. Don’t miss him again, dorks!

2673 - http://www.2673.org/
Mr. Uterus

“For me, noise, and specifically Can't, was a way of dealing with everything I hated, but over time it became a way of facing my fears. Now it changed again into a very special kind of trust exercise between me and an audience. Playing noise I have a special power to cause emotional discomfort and a physical pain in the ear. But I also have a power to bring about a really unique kind of closeness and shared ecstatic state between performer and audience. I don't want to say "cathartic" because that sounds too much like the 1980's, and I don't want to say "self-actualized" because that's too much like the 1990's, and I'm talking about here and now and being in a room with other people in real time having a unique experience that you can't describe in words. Yeah!

so to reiterate:

“Can't is my band, which is just me. I play analog synthesizers, sometimes I use rhythm boxes and distortion pedals, and I sing and dance. I don't use reverb or delay, or anything that messes with time. The music is an intensely personal investigation of being alive in the instant.” – Jessica Rylan of Can’t
