I can NOT stop listening to "The Freed Pig"! AAAarrgh!! I've listened like 6 times in a row.

JACK COLE AND GYGAX! AND ANYONE ELSE PLEASE DISCUSS

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

category: 1992

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

though i do like early Eric Gaffney era Sebadoh my vote would have to go with the Dead C vs. Sebadoh (which was released by Siltbreeze in0 1993). siltbreeze was such a great label there in the early nineties my ears just get misty thinking about it. "Blind" is a mighty fine song.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

nice job with the 1992 categorization, i have pondered this very thread before as you might imagine!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

CREEPER LAGOON vs. DEAD C. 7" on RATFISH RECORDS PWNS THIS THREAD.

YEAH WORD.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Bob used to live near my parents' house.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

THE FREED PIG IS NOT AS GOOD A SONG FROM SEBADOH III AS SCARS FOUR EYES.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

As much as I like Dead C, I would rather listen to Siege. Or even SSD, for that matter.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

FUCK IT ALL. SEBADOH WERE FUCKIN AWESOME.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Jason used to live with Bob near my parents' house. We'd get stoned and listen to Second Edition or Half Machine Lip Moves.

he spends a third of the year in arkansas! how fun is that?!?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

that bob fay song is really good on the end of one of those british eps from 1992 (i think).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah, doods, let's make this a Sebadoh search and destroy. Did you know there are NO Sebadoh threads on ILM? I didn't want to start this over there though. Sebadoh are such whipping boys. I didn't want some stupid Anglophile piece of shit crapping my thread negative.

somehow I made it through the 90s without ever owning a Sebadoh album! shit I have like 3 My Dad is Dead and 3 Sister Ray lps but no Sebadoh. How did this happen? Did I think I was too cool for their emo stylings? No way, I have like 3 7"s. Including "Oven Is My Friend". But no 'Asshole' ep :( I even have a Sentridoh 7" ! ("Losercore" -- Smells Like #1)

conventional wisdom is that III is the best right? Should I even bother with those first two juvenilia things? When do they start to flat-out suck? 'Bubble & Scrape'?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Bob Fay is fucking awesome. What a total bro.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

i think they started to flat out suck when Fay left the band and when all that Kids Folk Implosion shit started to happen (Barlow's songwriting taking a severe nosedive he's never recovered from). Also -- LOWENSTEIN IS THE COOLEST TOO! he was awesome when i saw him tour for his sub pop solo. LOUD AS FUCK ROCK POP!

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

also, plenty of good shit on the first tapes compiled for the first Homestead release.

"I AM A GENIUS."

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I bought a record from Bob Fay off of eBay. I didn't even know it was him until I got the email from the seller. I was like woah.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

SPARKALEPSY!

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

ha .. I just looked up what it was, it was a Kagel CD. Klangwolfe. I don't even know what that is. One of those Montaigne things I think.

Lou Barlow, the ORIGINAL OVER-RELEASER -- GRANDDADDY TO ALL SHITTY CD-R LABELS EVERYWHERE! NO CRAPPY SONG SHALL REMAIN UNRELEASED!

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

SPARKALEPSY RULES. I need to find that tape and make you all copies.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

I WOULD LOVE A COPY! IT HAS BEEN YEARS!

also, Bakesale is the end of the fucking line for Sebadoh. Even with decent Lowenstein songs on the last few albums after that, the Barlow songs are so awful it doesn't matter.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

i have a sparkalepsy 7". who's buying?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

what about Sentridoh cassettes on Shrimper? can those pull in the coin?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

i have BOTH sparkalepsy 7"ers. the UNRLEASED TAPE is where it's at.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

best sebadoh live show i saw -- midsize venue with shitty but popular hardcore band opening for them. lots of hardcore bozos in audience attempting to heckle sebadoh when they began. band confers with each other, glares at audience, and then proceeds to convert set into 20 minute blast furnace of HARDCORE, upon finishing Lou Barlow telling the audience to go fuck itself. BRILLIANT!

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

best sebadoh show i ever saw: with crain (it was the speed record release party) and hula hoop, at another place sammich shop, louisville. after sebadoh's "regular" set (with lots of interjections from lou about how they had done acid the night before and how some dude had told them that stomping on a distortion pedal was "gettin' political, man"), jason noble from rodan and jon cook from crain joined in on a massively awesome super jam whatever getting political acid rock session. wish someone got it on tape.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

tho the time they played with the bunnybrains at tramps and i got backstage and drank too much and got hit on by some severely older woman who kept talking about todd rundgren then finally found my date later (who stopped talking to me after that night) and went with sebadoh to their hotel suite (provided by conan and nbc) to smoke some bowls only to pass out on their couch and stupidly be late to meet my parents back upstate for "parents weekend" was pretty fun too.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

I HAVE THE BELT BUCKLE 7"

EAT MY FUCK FEWLS!!!!

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I only saw Sebadoh one time. They headlined a triple bill with Vertigo and Clawhammer opening up! Lou did the sloppy play a bad show on purpose thing, I think, I can't remember too well.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

i've had a weird life.

also, mike flood = most important member of sebadoh!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

stormy i sold those shrimper tapes last year and didnt get much for them...the money is in the Mountain Goat shrimper tapes...I sold 2 for FIFTY BUX.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

thumbs down on the goat.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

FUCKIN AMEN BROTHER.

I worked for SHIMMY DISC in 93 and they "distributed" shrimper...so I grabbed all of them....never really understood why peeps dig the mountain goats.

now WCKR SPGT i'd understand.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

no shit, ddb?? didn't most of that stuff come out on those comp CDs? hell, I could sure use that scratch. I think I have 2, "Hot Garden Stomp" and another one.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

DDB, YOU WORKED WITH KR@MER, MR. UPTIGHT WEED INHALER ARTIST RIP OFFER? HA HA HA! THAT GUY HAS A STICK SO FAR UP HIS ASS I DOUBT ITS EVEN REMOTELY RETRIEVABLE.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

yeah but you gotta admit those galaxie 500 albums are good.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

stence i was at that show at tramps w/ bunnybrains!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

did you see me??? i was at the side of the stage, drunk, telling the security guy to fuck off for calling tara o'neil a bitch.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Kr4mer wasn't around too much...and when I did see him he was always pretty cool. I got paid shit and this one dood, David from Hoboken (maybe somebody knows him) that worked there was a total DOOSH BAG.

I STOLE MY WEIGHT IN RECORDS TOO!

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

i was also at that tramps show

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

did you see my hot date? i think she's married now.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

kr@mer's done lots of good music/production -- its his business ethics and attitude that are questionable. he is a text book example of self medication with the maryjane.

i released a record by people who had worked with and had been on sh1mmy -- the h0rr0r st0r1es they told and the h@tred they expressed.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

don't worry jack, hatred and horror stories won't google themselves!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah...i mean he is a dick for sure...i hear horror stories all the time.

what shimmy band/record did put out jack?

FALSE FRONT?
THE TINKLERS?
LIDA HUSIK?

SO MANY BAD RECORD ON SHIMMY WITH ALL THE SAME BAD HAZY REVERB POT HEAD PRODUCTION!

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

some favorite shimmy releases:

Boredoms and Ruins albums
Fly Ashtray albums
Jad Fair & Kramer Roll Out The Barrel
Dogbowl's first two or three albums
some Bongwater
When People Were Shorter And Lived Near The Water (i heart kim r@ncourt)
and my favorite daniel johnston lp, 1990
also shockabilly reissues

also, TINKLERS ARE GREAT -- YOU SUCK!

(FALSE FRONT might be the worst band ever on the label -- but there are so many other choices)

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

haha, When People Were Shorter and Lived Near the Water!! dude I grew up watching Bill Kennedy. I loved that record.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Ive probably told this story somewhere else. but...here goes.

I had to reopen 1500 When People Were Shorter And Lived Near The Water LP's because the plant forgot to put an insert in. The insert was retarded. It was summer and I was in some shitty record plant in some brooklyn ghetto, cutting open LPs and inserting a fucking PHOTOCOPY of some dumb shit....it took like a day and half.

I WILL ALWAYS HATE When People Were Shorter And Lived Near The Water. Even if Kim was a pretty cool dood when i met him!

So if u have their (i think) second LP...I TOUCHED YOUR RECORD!!!!!

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Bobby Goldborough never sounded so good.
also, the hilarity of Gershwin's estate getting pissed off when they did an album of Porgy & Bess, Chris Xefos singing the Bess parts -- great!

Kim and Dave Rick are sweet as pie. INTERNS ARE SUPPOSED TO GET ALL THE SHITTY JOBS ANYWAY -- DUH! SUCK IT UP LIKE A MAN!

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I decided to listen to "The Freed Pig" and "Scars 4 Eyes." My daughter seemed intrigued by the former and when "Scars 4 Eyes" came on she walked up to the stereo with the intent of turning it off.

I think that last song on Sebadoh III was the only Eric Gaffney song I liked, but I taped it from KSDT and the tape ran out before it got to that song.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I don't think ddb was an intern!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

if you saw my paycheck you'd think so

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

dude, it was prolly better than my $8 a day. tho when i cleaned gerard's officelistened to demos it was $8 an hour. god bless g. cosloy.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

i wuz just thinking of shimmy disc! cuz i was trying to remember this dood's name that lived with my bother and me at bunnybrainz house in new milford, CT.in the early 90's. his name was alan. i thought of it. he was from austin and he recorded one-man psych tapes under the name arthur stone. i wish i had one of those. anyway, these two shimmy employees came and hang out a couple of times. they were nice. they were laydeez.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

WAS ALAN KIND OF A FAT DOOD FROM CANADA?

I CANT THINK OF THE CHIX NAMES I WORKED WITH, BUT THERE WERE 3...THEY WERE ALL KINDA RAD.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

my brother would know the laydeez names. yeah, they were nice. plus, they said they had big rekkerd collections which is always enuff to make me love a gal. i think they gave me the nice glow in the dark galaxie 500 t-shirt that i still wear.

no, alan was from texas. he was skinny and fidgety.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

GERARD HAS NEVER HAD AN INTERN!!!!

what about Sentridoh cassettes on Shrimper? can those pull in the coin?

SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH: Wasted Pieces CS (recently reissued on CD I think)

I saw Sebadoh with Tsunami (simple machines), Diskothi-Q (shrimper), and Further (xmas) in 1992!!!! YAY!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't Gerard's intern, I was D@v3 M@rt!n's. You know, the guy with 75,204 kids. But Gerard did hire me to clean his officelisten to demos (in LYL3 HYs3n of DAS DAMEN FAME's office - he was on vacation) for $8 an hour because he is a sweet prince of a man. I was one broke-ass college student that summer.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 3 March 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

but is he your myspace friend?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 3 March 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

not anymore, i think he deleted his account or something. he was, for like a second. thanks, t33t3r you dummie.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 3 March 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

wtf kind of name is t33t3r anyway? do her parents call her "teats" for short?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 3 March 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

"you are a teat!"

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 3 March 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

It's a small noise world after all. When I lived in Pittsburgh, I bought my first Dead C and Sebadoh discs from Mr. Martin back in the days of Jim's Records which is now Randy's CDs. Bob Fay was?still is? working at the Trader Joes a few miles down the road. I bet I'm the only person in Western MA to play Deluxx on the radio. For the taking sides its the Dead C, especailly in their songs-falling-apart mode.

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 4 March 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Bob lives in LA now, last i heard. I haven't talked to him in about 3-4 years. I see D@ve all the time and he's THE MAN.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 4 March 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Jim's records! I bought some Milkshake's records there.
