Let talk about increased US presence in the caucausus? Georgia seems to be one of the main recipients of this. will it stabilize the country? obviously theres a regional power balance thing going on here, and georgia has been unstable since independence (but, more so than armenia and azerbaijan?). is tblisi more important to US interests than either baku or yerevan? or, are they being brought into the sphere as well? and, with the current stand off with uzbekistan, how is that going to play our (i'm taking this as uzbekistan slightly misreading the situation, or have they, in the big scheme of things?)

sorry charlton but the last 24 hours have seen geomagnetic storm conditions reach the G-2 level, and there could be more on the way. The CME from the M8.6 flare mentioned in the last report struck home, triggering a geomagnetic storm and aurora. Some impressive aurora were seen and photographed in the northern US and Canada
There are at least two more weak CMEs on the way, and the next couple days could well see a continuation of the geomagnetic activity. All of the action is due to a series of powerful flares fired of by sunspot region 652.

May be obvious gareth, but I think that the U'S' is mainly concerned with the Chechnyan independence movement and their increased use of suicide bombers. The U.S. probably fears Al-Q support for these activities and wants to curb the rise of terrorism in the unstable central Asian region, especially with the high profile that the Russian mob/cronyism/Yukos is getting these days. The caucausus have always been a troubled region (Russia was trying to put down Independence movements there in the 1870s) and is a very tribal area, I think. The U.S. ay be trying to stabilize the country by rooting out some of the corruption (not that it will work) and establishing an ally in the area, separate from the Russian Republic itself. Also, the Moscow subway bombing earlier this year probably has something to do with it.

thorJESUHOY (Thor), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

jocelyn otm. i would imagine that the looming spectre of afghanistan has something to do with this, with the gov't now being loath to let areas with a potential for radical political/religious activity destabilize further.

two years pass...
Time for "Thunder Road" to be reissued as a single?

Gov. Sonny Perdue said Wednesday he does not support letting Georgians vote on the question of allowing Sunday beer and wine sales at grocery and convenience stores.

Speaking on Atlanta radio station Q100, Perdue said the proposal before the General Assembly to allow such sales, "is going to have a tough time.

"I don't support that. I don't know whether it will pass the Legislature or not, but it will have a pretty tough time getting the last vote."

The "last vote" is Perdue's. If the House and Senate pass the bill allowing local voters to approve such sales, the governor can veto it.

"Think of it this way," the governor added in the radio interview. "It really helps you plan ahead for the rest of your life - buying on Saturday, rather than Sunday. Time management."

Perdue did not elaborate on why he does not support Sunday sales, and his aides declined to clarify the matter. A religious conservative who does not drink, Perdue has vetoed several alcohol bills in the past.

four years pass...

Might as well ask in this thread, even if it wasn't started to ask tourism-related questions. Anyways, anyone ever been to Georgia and Armenia? Any recommendations?

jibé (Jibe), Sunday, 7 August 2011 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

No but I'm interested. Has anyone been to Batumi? I was looking at goin there next year maybe.

Is there enough to do in Yerevan to keep you occupied for a week?

Fear I may struggle in a country where the word for 'thank you' is 'shnorhakalutyun' but I've never been out that way yet and it looks interesting.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Monday, 10 November 2014 22:39 (eleven years ago)

Should point out I know Yerevan isn't in Georgia, but Jibe asked about Armenia upthread.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Monday, 10 November 2014 22:42 (eleven years ago)

i spent 2 days in yerevan iirc 3 years ago (after asking for info on this thread basically) and i'd say a week is going to feel extremely long. but if you're there for a week you might as well travel around a bit to visit any of the innumerable monasteries all around

Jibe, Thursday, 13 November 2014 10:07 (eleven years ago)

Thanks! I've booked for a week but plan to get out to Garni, etc, if i can.
