on friday $boy and i ate ethiopian food. it was weird because the waitress didn't really know any english and they had for some reason stopped cooking chicken (so i couldn't have doro wat!!!)? we talked about abortions and it was very romantic.

Wife and I went out for sushi on Saturday to what gygax has called "one of the best sushi restaurants int the Bay Area". It is in the East Bay. Then we went to see famous record-selector MICHAEL MAYER and other noize people like Drew Daniel and Mitlon were in attendance. The ghost of JaXon was also rumored to be there.

i go to "real restaurants" thousdands of times a week!

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

a nice young woman of my acquaintance asked me to dinner at her house tonight but it's freezing cold and she lives in Harlem ie some ways away, so I told her I'd take a raincheck.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

real restaurants = waiter asks you if you approve the wine, expecting that you actually know something about wine

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

what's so hard to know about wine? if it tastes good, it's good!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

actually the only thing you need to "know" is that it's not a bad bottle and hasn't turned into vinegar.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

and so the waiter gets you to taste it first! if it sucks you can tell him (tho that's pretty rare, obv.).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

dont you just smell the flippin' cork?

green uno skip card (ex machina), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

maybe you do

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

my idear of "good" wine is when i know it's not malt liquor in disguise. not in a box perhaps?

i'm fortunate that if we ever go somewhere nice, the wife goes for mixed drinks instead of wine, so i can jam on the whiskey and coke and i get to avoid total revealing my ignorance. of course, any time we go somewhere really nice, i feel like i'm about to laugh the entire time.

here's where we went:
http://www.arthursrestaurant.com/

wow, classy midi file of clair de lune!!

sat next to the fireplace and everything.

this woulda been better... look at that pie!

msp (msp), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

i want pie

green uno skip card (ex machina), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

yeah basically when someone asks me if the wine is OK i think "ok, does it smell or taste like vinegar?" but i think i'm SUPPOSED to be thinking "ah, this 2003 is slightly fruitier than the 2002 but it'll do quite well with the halibut."

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

The thing with wine is that your nose can tell you a million things about a glass of wine and your mouth can only tell you five or six.

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

halibut

RED SNAPPER

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

An easier way to tell if the wine is bad using your eyes... look at the bottom/sides of the cork... if the bottom of the cork is excessively porous (or completely rotten as was the case in one bottle i saw) and if the sides of the cork have "veins" (stained trails) that run from the bottom of the cork towards the top, the wine should probably be used for salad dressing instead.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

The thing with wine is that your nose can tell you a million things about a glass of wine and your mouth can only tell you five or six.

Since this is turning into the Noize Wine Thread, just allow me to butt in here and mention that, though all the senses should be engaged when enjoying wine, it is not recommended to pour the wine onto your eyeballs. It's not the done thing.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Ian and I drank the grossest wine once......

green uno skip card (ex machina), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I CHOOSE WINE BASED ON HOW DEEP MY THUMB GOES INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOTTLE!

THIS IS HOW YOU SHOULD CHOOSE FRIENDS TOO!

S!monB!rch (Carey), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

i drank cooking wine once because i didn't understand why they'd sell it to minors if the alcohol content was the same as normal wine. it tasted like ocean water.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

michael that is so not noize

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 10 March 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)
