i wonder if any of these people ever played huddersfield

no good music has ever come from huddersfield, though there is apparently a grime scene of sorts there

it looks like this

http://www.norfolkwindmills.com/postcards/huddersfield.jpg

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

that is to say

http://www.norfolkwindmills.com/postcards/huddersfield.jpg

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

all the shops in that postcard, in reality , are empty or boarded up. well, a significant majority anyway

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 12 March 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
the buses are green and yellow

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 13 June 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

but still, i dont care...about the north, anymore

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 13 June 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Is Brits hating on the north like Americans hating on the south?

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 13 June 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

TNWRA

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 13 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

ian, sort of, but not really. the north of england is far too industrial to be compared to the american south (detroit and cleveland are a better comparison)

im a northerner myself, but ive felt the ties gradually melt away, all the good things in life for me are now in london. i dont mind though, life is pretty fucking great

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 13 June 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

also, i think maybe regionalist pride (whether liverpool/manc, or yorks) is much more left wing. im not saying the north has ever been a hotbed of socialism, but the unions were always strong here, and were always pretty leftist in a number of ways (but reactionary in many others)

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 13 June 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

uddersfield.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 13 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

none of the things in my original list are from huddersfield. not much is from huddersfield, never mind

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 13 June 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Is this thread an IP trap?

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Monday, 13 June 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

no, but the other one is

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 13 June 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

gareth are you a tory?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

??????????

im a socialist, dude. and, sometimes, a socialist dude

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

why on earth would anyone say such a horrible thing? im quite taken aback

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

you described regionalist pride as "left wing" and that you have less and less of it these days.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

no, no!

i meant that regionalist pride in the north of england is more left wing, than regionalist pride in the american south (re: ians question), perhaps partly due to the lack of non-urban lands

i dunno, i'll always be a northerner, and i'll certainly always be a socialist, but, at the same time, i feel like a londoner now. the ties that bind to home, have loosened, and i realise im different now, there are a million ties to london, which have superceded ties to 'home'

ie, you can never go home. because, home changes when you are gone

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

that is to say, i dont think regionalist pride is a left wing phenomenon, just that it is more entwined with leftwing outlook in this particular case, than many cases

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

ah, well i guess you should've been more specific. but as for the american south, it was predominantly democrat (or "as left as this country gets") until nixon.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

yea, im aware of that. im also aware of the parallels between the democrats and old labour in regard to institutionalized racism while being economically left wing (again, comparatively). but, what i mean is, i dont really think of the north of england, and the south of america as comparable, simply because the north of england is overwhelmingly urban, and has always remained labour

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

and also the unions, in that regard (very left wing in a number of ways, yet patchy record on racism. great in some cases, appalling in others, the old left is a sticky beast sometimes)

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

or, ok, i think where the comparison falls down REALLY, is that the north of england is, and always has been, in my mind, the most left leaning part of the country

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

ie, liverpool had a TROTSKYITE mayor in the early 80s

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

i always imagine everything in northern england is covered in soot

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

it used to be! until recently. about 18 months ago

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

though i think its going to take a bit longer than that to sort Burnley out

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

I have greatly enjoyed the North, on occasion.

Amazing how little of the UK I have actually seen though.

Never been to Liverpool.

Please play Lou Reed's irritating guitar sounds (Tom D.), Friday, 28 March 2025 11:22 (two months ago)

I don't think there is any mid-sized Town or City in England that has anything with the global cultural cache of the Huddersfield Music Festival and this record label is obviously an offshoot of its growing success. It's reight fooking sophisticated and that!

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Friday, 28 March 2025 11:34 (two months ago)

Yes, I just bought a CD from this label!

Please play Lou Reed's irritating guitar sounds (Tom D.), Friday, 28 March 2025 11:35 (two months ago)

I have genuinely considered going to the Festival — should have gone last year with all the AACM related music but had to settle for listening to highlights on the BBC New Music Show
