TRAINSPOTTING

So Friday night I borrowed a few movies from my friends in Albany one of which was David Fincher's "The Game" starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn as brothers.

Anyway in one of the first scenes, Michael and Sean are sitting at a restaurant (I think it's the one on California/Market streets in SF) and one of Sean's lines is:

          CONRAD
I don't need anything from you. I
was laying on a beach somewhere in
Spain, naked,
and, it hit me --
Nickie's birthday. So, here I am,
four layovers, twenty-seven hours
flying and one donkey ride later.
Not necessarily in that order.

But I'm pretty sure he says "Ibitza" [sic] instead of "somewhere in Spain"... and it struck me the as a very similar line to the LCD Soundsystem "Losing My Edge" lyric. Is this a common phrase?

So I guess this might be a question for Gareth.

That movie was awesome. I don't remember that line specifically; I saw it a few years ago. BUT, I think the notion of laying naked on beaches is pretty common.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Results 1 - 10 of about 4,520 for "lying naked on a beach". (0.54 seconds)

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

It's a good movie.

You have friends in Albany? Who?

VIC MACKEY (nordicskilla), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

i went to Albany once

i dont know, it could just as easily be "in spain somewhere", as eebeetha specifically. guess it depends on the context

ive never been to ibiza. i think i'd like to have gone in 1972 with the eurogeoisie from zurich and milan

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Albany, CA, Gareth?

or Albany, NY?

or another?

VIC MACKEY (nordicskilla), Monday, 21 March 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

oh yes, silly me, it never occured to me that it was unlikely for gygax to borrow some films from someone thousands of miles away. (i had forgotton there was an albany in ca)

i went to this one

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

I was born in Albany, NY. Well actually, it was Schenectady, NY. Well actually, it was Niskayuna, NY.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

i was born there too! in TEH BELLEVUE WOMAN'S HOSPITAL! vic, i almost went to RPI. my dad got his master's in materials engineering or somesuch there. also rotterdam is some kind of dump! i am from saratoga. but now i am in rochester, which is wonderful!

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

my bestest friend from jr high and highschool just moved to Saratoga. i do not know why.

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

do you mean saratoga, CA? because i mean saratoga springs, NY.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

if it's Saratoga Springs, JaXoN, then the reason is clear = they love HORSE RACING

Wow Caitlin that's crazy. I was probably in the same hospital. not sure though. I know I actually have my birth certificate around here somewhere. I will try to find it. and actually, I was born in Niskayuna, but at the time my mom and dad lived in BALLSTON SPA.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

i lived in ballston spa from the ages of ~3 to 8 or 9. i hate horse racing.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Taking sides: Ibitza [sic] vs. Upstate NY

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

no, it's definitely Saratoga Springs, NY

one of my close friends from that time period (angela) met a navy boy and moved with him there and had a couple of babies. and then my other best friend (shera) followed her there and met a man and now has a baby and stuff. and then finally shera's best friend (heidi) followed her there and has a baby and shit.

they all grew up in LA, and now they live in upstate ny. don't make sense to a city boy like me

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

My landlords moved to upstate NY. I guess they can go hang out with Rachael Ray now.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 24 March 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

I think I was born at Bellevue too! RPI was kind of a pain in the ass, but a good experience overall.

also rotterdam is some kind of dump

what! but rotterdam is a nice place to live, it says so right on the signs! anyway at least it's not schenectady, which is about the best thing i can say about it. saratoga's fun. i think i drove through rochester on my way to toronto once. what's there?

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 24 March 2005 06:21 (twenty years ago)

mh, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 13:26 (eight years ago)

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 03:09 (seven years ago)

good lyrics in that video simon watches tho

my wife sells cheese on the internet / i think about her sister when we're intimate

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 03:10 (seven years ago)

one month passes...

finally watched the sequel. my expectations were very low, they were exceeded. it covered all the bases, maybe a little too thoroughly but for a follow-up to a movie that was popular among people of an age because it fell into that dark/edgy/transgressive space, it played it off without falling into that trap

ewen bremner definitely the star of the film, scene where mcgregor/carlyle are side-by-side in the toilets was maybe the best staged
