it's a great city; you'll have a blast. visit ocean drive on south beach. to really appreciate it, you should see it on a saturday night, when it's packed and pulsating with energy, but i also like it early in the morning, for a lazy breakfast at one of the trendy restaurants lining the street. coral gables (a bit south) or west palm beach (two counties north) are the place for understated elegance.

i'm from coral gables, and will praise it endlessly. miracle mile has interesting shopping and restaurants; and the closeby gables mall, the village of merrick park, is upscale shopping with designer stores lining the bottom floor.

downtown miami has a vibrant charm, especially the brickell corridor. and calle ocho (8th street) is an experience, with a unique bussle and energy.

haha. yeah, drink prices are bad. i would say try the "miami spice" dinner at a number of sobe restaurants ($35 set-price for three-course dinner), but glancing at the miami spice website, it looks like most of them don't have this offer on friday nights.

lots of cool coral gables restaurants offer "miami spice" on friday. gables is better anyway.
