DEEBZ (ddb), Friday, 1 October 2004 13:20 (twenty years ago) link

DEEBZ (ddb), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:08 (twenty years ago) link

puma sure is stupid.

sparks the band are totally better then any band "deebz" likes.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:18 (twenty years ago) link

"Deebz" really likes SLAYER.

SHUTUP TIME STARTS NOW.

DEEBZ (ddb), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago) link

i'm totally feelin No. 1 In Heaven right now.
what is the story on these guys? It seems like their output has been rather diverse but consistantly good? Hows the s/t???

brock (brock), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:29 (twenty years ago) link

i got your back this time, ddb. sparks the band is OK at best and only listenable in small novelty dosages. this time the puma aint stupid at all (especially if one pretends he didnt order a Meat Beat Manifesto cd from amazon).

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

YAY!!!!!!!!!

DEEBZ (ddb), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:50 (twenty years ago) link

MEAT BEAT WHO?

DEEBZ (ddb), Friday, 1 October 2004 14:51 (twenty years ago) link

totally not consistent, they put out some really terrible records! But still more good records then most. Here's my Rough Guide to Sparks, made before the last (great) album came out:

Fa La Fa Lee
Girl From Germany
Beaver O'Lindy
Whippings and Apologies
This Town...
Amateur Hour
Talent is an Asset
Propaganda/At Home, At Work, At Play
BC
Something for the Girl With Everything
Beat The Clock
My Other Voice
The No. 1 Song in HEaven
Just Because You Love Me
Tips for Teens
When I'm With You
Angst in My Pants
Eaten by the Monster of Love
Cool Places
Music That You Can Dance To

and don't start hating on Meat Beat Manifesto or I'm gonna have to boycot this "noize" board.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:00 (twenty years ago) link

"Angst in my Pants" is one of the best songs I've ever heard (also, best song title ever)

I'm only familiar with them from random downloads, though. Is the two-disc best-of a good buy?

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago) link

the problem with sparks is a massive amount more bad songs to good and them drowning in their own schtick.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:11 (twenty years ago) link

and that schtick is....

brock (brock), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:12 (twenty years ago) link

...gay

DEEBZ (ddb), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago) link

dramatic, jokey songs, etc

schtick is dangerous and can easily go awry.

dont get me wrong. sparks has some good songs, more the early stuff than the later.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago) link

the problem with sparks is a massive amount more bad songs to good

true, but i'll take their "good" moments over the consistancy of most other bands.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

it's sort of like ween, ya know.

when the first album, God Ween Satan came out on Twin/Tone when i was in college i thought it was pretty funny and liked the lo-fi weed-addled novelty rock but by the third album it just got really old.

--

you have a point, lauren, to which I bow.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago) link

ack !! talkin shit on teh ween!!!
godweensatan was the third ween album i bought (mollusk, white pepper), and i was stoked on it. but thats as far as i've gone with ween, and i love em.
sparks = more quirk-pop than ween? not as uh druggy?

brock (brock), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago) link

does this mean we have to break up, brock? ;-0

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:26 (twenty years ago) link

dan's rough guide is right on, brock. aside from no.1, my other favorite albums are kimono my house and angst in my pants.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago) link

dude "Amateur Hour" is like the best song ever.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 October 2004 15:31 (twenty years ago) link

The only consistently good albums are probably Kimono My House, Propaganda and No. 1 Song in Heaven. I can take maybe 1/3rd of most of the rest of their records, and there's one or two I won't go near.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 October 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago) link

I had Angst In My Pants (uh.. the LP) when you were all in diapers.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 1 October 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago) link

so you're old, is that what you're saying?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 October 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago) link

i was in diapers in 1874, so that makes gygax, 57?

kephm (kephm), Friday, 1 October 2004 16:52 (twenty years ago) link

diapers are way noise

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Friday, 1 October 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

so whats the consensus on Lil' Beethoven? "I Married Myself" seems to be the hit off of that album. you can get the vinyl on their website for 30 bucks =(. bleck.

brock (brock), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

I am not as old as MAELBROS

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago) link

I had a cassette of the one with "Cool Places" and "All You Ever Think About is Sex" and "Popularity" when it came out. It's still the only Sparks record I own.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago) link

Lil' Beethoven is great. I saw them perform the entire thing at Central Park, they put on a great show.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 October 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

Nah, Woofer In Tweeters Clothing, Big Beat, and Indiscreet are also all good all the way through. The first 2 are my 2 favorite Sparks albums, the most rocking.
