is there a shortcut to insert empty row?
― cutty, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)
i've been doing right click->insert->empty row->CTRL-YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
― cutty, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)
just left click and insert
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)
err i guess right click i get l/r confused
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)
select the row you want to insert the cell above and then click.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)
hahahaha
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)
srsly there is a little shortcuts menu that pops up if you select and right click. you should not have to have to do any of this other nonsense.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)
how would that work? right click brings up contextual menu. i'm talking bout keyboard shorcuttys.
― cutty, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)
a contextual menu is not a shortcut!
a shortcut is something you use to avoid the contextual menu, usually a ctrl something keystroke.
― cutty, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)
but you can just insert an empty row by selecting "insert" in that menu, it's much quicker than going into the insert menu!
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)
what if i want to insert 20 rows?
― cutty, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)
Context menus have received some criticism from usability analysts when improperly used, as some applications make certain features only available in context menus, which may confuse even experienced users (especially when the context menus can only be activated in a limited area of the application's client window).
bell labs is an imbecile cutty you are wasting your time

― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)
not if you select an entire row. go over to the numbers for the rows and click on the first one, select down to the first one's value + x and then select insert from the right-click menu, voila, you now have x+whatever number of new rows

ok here is a question - so how do i start row numbering at 1 a few rows down from the top, where say, the first couple of rows have info in them but want to start numbering at a dif line b/c i want to keep a count of things in a particular 'row section' - i mean can you make row sections?

― max, Thursday, 8 November 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)
also, do i have to make a macro to sort by column? e.g., if i have a column of last names and want to sort alphabetically? (obv i am used to access and word)
this is all sort of being done in anticipation of me setting up some kind of database perhaps if that might work better - it's like a client and product ordering thing (but not 'product management')
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 8 November 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)
btw i just like saying macro but i don't really know what it means teach me the ways of the excel nerd for i wish to be one of you
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 8 November 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)
rrrrob - to sort by column, select the data you want to sort - go to "sort" in the data toolbar and select your criteria. you can also mess around with trying autofilter on your column headings.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 8 November 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)
macros are more for automating on tasks/charts that you will be making over and over again.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 8 November 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)
oh cool! thanks! i am going to look into 'macros' but first maybe 'filters'

if I am understanding you correctly, what you can do is type the number "1" in a blank cell next to the top cell of the row section you want to number. Hover your mouse over the bottom left corner of the cell, and when your cursor turns into a +, click and drag the mouse downwards, and it will automatically fill in numbers.

wtf is up with the formatting on MS word? i copy and paste something and it goes all wacky, half in bold, have in size 16 RED letters, fonts all over the place, when neither the destination or source formats had any of that shit???!
(sorry this is like the 1 project i have to use word on a year and it drives me insane....)

andd dont get me started on the tabs/margins
seriously. is this intuitive for ANYONE?
― bell_labs, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)
bell, my weak solution is to have a notepad file open at all times to paste into, recopy and drop into whatever doc so fonts/sizes match what i'm working on. shit always goes haywire if you copy/paste HTML. other progs too.

My HS tech teacher (AWESOME MAN) made an xls w/eqns et al to make sure none of the theater techies working on the plays wld have overlapping RF frequencies on the walkie-talkie thinglike thing system. Was für ein Badass!
I ran into him in downtown Boise (he lived in my hometown 400 miles away) when shrooming,,,,,whoa boy that was awesome & confusing. He was always photocopying me puzzles from old issues of Omni. Eventually I started dating his son and I hung out w/his dad (tech teacher) and his brothers probably more than said BF who was always jamming Led Zep on his guitar downstairs. (*barfs*) His dad and I would have timed Jumble contests, play Myst together helping each other solve the puzzles, work on maths word problems, He taught me how to use SoundEdit 16 and we'd geek out on paper & printing presses together, read PC Week (IIRC that is its name) together, and just geex out. God that was a brilliant and upstanding man. We played frisbee golf together....

― carl agatha, Monday, 10 June 2013 18:17 (twelve years ago)
Aw, he's using AutoShapes. That's cheating! I was hoping it was built from a grid of really tiny cells.
(In 2003, Insert -> Picture -> Autoshapes. In 2007, I think it's Insert -> Shapes. They're a massive pain in the ass to work with so it's still something of a feat but you can position them wherever you like and if you double-click on them you get gradient shading and transparency and stuff so they're pretty full-featured for something probably nobody ever uses.
Or you can rightclick on his picture in Excel and choose "Ungroup" and see some of the shapes he's used but he's got groups of groups of groups of... down to like 8 levels deep and holy hell if you ungroup them all with a macro there are nearly 12,000 shapes in total. That must have taken a long time. My laptop is crying just redrawing them all.)
