Hi hstencil,

I can understand why you might disagree with some of Tim's views but your attitude lately has been a pathetic insult not only to Tim, but yourself. I like Tim and his writing on music, I've been reading his work for close to 15 years and always enjoy his thoughts and perspective regardless of whether it parallels mine or not.

Refraining from mentioning my sensitivity or trying to pass it off as wink-nudge humor, could you please explain why you continue to get off on being such an insufferable prick to Tim? I had to moderate some really beyond-tasteless shit you wrote concerning Tim a month or two ago... I gave you the benefit of the doubt at that time, but after skimming thread after thread with your tiresome snipy bullshit it leads me to wonder what your motives are exactly?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

um gygax! i have no idea why you choose to single me out when everyone on the noize bored treats each other like this. like when i make fun of something jack cole does or doesn't like, he doesn't whine to me about it, nor need an online pal to stick up for him. i don't see why tim should be any different. if he or you take what i write so seriously, then i think it's more up to the both of you to consider WHY you take it so seriously, not whether i should change my behavior (which is par for the course around here -- unless you're going to stick up for everybody, perhaps you should!).

tim brought up "children of the future," an album i like. i said that i liked it, and added the killers thing as a little joke since tim has made his love for them clear, and i would've thought that both he and you would have the good sense of humor to realize that liking that band is definitely a "running joke" around here. lord knows i'm not the only noize boreder to make fun (keyword: fun) of tim about it. it's not that serious. tim then, for whatever reason, wrote his response post, and i made a further one, which (to me anyway) was harmless as well.

to add a further point, tim and i got in a fairly serious discussion on that ggd ilm thread -- and i think it was pretty obvious that dispite disagreeing with him quite strongly, i was still very respectful, far more than i usually am accorded i might add.

in short, gygax!, you're my friend, but i think you're being, yes, exceptionally "sensitive" about all this. i understand that you have a long history with tim and respect him a lot, and that's cool. but that doesn't change the fact that ANYONE can be called on ANYTHING on this bored. that's the way it is. if you don't like it, you can change it, but don't think it just starts and ends with me making some mild jabs about a steve miller album. 'cause that's just nonsense.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 21 April 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

i mean deaner jabs at me all the livelong day and YOU KNOW WHAT? i think it's funny! i am not asking you or any other friend of mine to stick up for me when he makes fun, because it doesn't matter! why should tim be a special case?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 21 April 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

i like teh killers :(

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 21 April 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah you have bad taste too! and i make fun of it all the time! but we still bro down.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 21 April 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Thanks hstencil for explaining your POV. Like I said, I initially gave you the benefit of the doubt, but that really bothersome thing you wrote that I had to moderate a month or two ago seemed a little more sinister/mean-spirited (and frankly disturbing!).

More importantly, Tim has mentioned absolutely nothing to me of this, I just felt like you were being quite oppressive with your persistent needling and, from my view, Tim has not provoked you in any way (unlike your "fun"/friendly jabs with Jack Cole or Dean! may have prompted).

to add a further point, tim and i got in a fairly serious discussion on that ggd ilm thread -- and i think it was pretty obvious that dispite disagreeing with him quite strongly, i was still very respectful, far more than i usually am accorded i might add.

You may want to revisit your posts if you truly feel that way:
http://ilx.p3r.net/thread.php?msgid=5687909

Because in that thread you come off like an immature prick, esp. the name-calling and patronizing tone:
maybe i haven't heard much free jazz? god you are one douchebag tim.

i mean do you SERIOUSLY ever bother READING?
-- hstencil (hstenc!...), April 14th, 2005 3:36 PM. (hstencil)

I can't seriously believe you studied music at all.

I did not ask what the guy "meant." I very forcefully put down his meaning becuase it's wholly inaccurate!
Unless you're Tim and can't read and like crappy radio music.

yeah i have both their albums, doughhead.
-- hstencil (hstenc!...), April 14th, 2005 3:43 PM. (hstencil)

You don't come off as someone who's all wink-wink/nudgy as you claim above. Like I said, I had given you the benefit of the doubt, but I think you're being dishonest with yourself if you think those comments were made in a good-fun-happy-joketime manner.

I think it's pretty clear that I like Tim and his writing. I'd be very bummed out if he chose to leave this forum due to you constantly railing him in what I perceive to be an "online-bully" manner, when he appears to take a higher-road approach to his debate.

And yes I also consider you a friend. But you're being an intolerable asshole to Tim. I hope that Tim continues to post here and you do as well, and I'm sorry that you think I'm being sensitive about this.

FWIW, I haven't been as jokey as usual with my comments lately.

efil4zelffor (deangulberry), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

gygax! of course i look like a prick when you take those quote completely out of context, ie without the needling posts that tim put before them. i think those posts are pretty mild, quite honestly, considering how completely condescending (and quite wrong, imo) he was in that thread. his claims that i've never heard free jazz or the ccc albums aren't as big an insult as calling him "doughhead" (tho that is a fairly mild thing to call somebody! and if i'm a "prick" for taking tim to task for liking "radio music" then somebody please tell off all the ilm regulars on the dave matthews band thread!), true, but considering the context of the conversation, his basic rhetorical stance to challenge the "credibility" of anyone who dares to defy his "expert" (ha!) status is pure bullshit. sorry, g!, sorry timmy, but I HAVE STUDIED this stuff extensively - tho gee i don't have a master's degree.

i am sorry that you're offended, gygax!, but i also think it's sort of horseshit and by starting with me you're making this a lot bigger of a problem than it is (and it seems pretty infinitesimal to me to begin with). for one, you could have PRIVATELY asked me to stop. but no, you have to go the public, drama route. for two, if you're getting on my ass about being a "prick" online, i can easily remind you of many things not only that you've done to and said about me in the past on various forums, but to other people as well. if you're without sin, cast the first stone. otherwise, shut it because you look like an awful hypocrite.

lastly, thanks to whomever unlocked this thread. i would've liked to have dropped this, or handled it privately, but thanks to you and to gygax!'s incessant need for entertainment/"drama" (that he says he avoids, yeah right), it's still going. hope you're happy.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Yes I have been a prick before and if history serves correct, I may be a prick again. I might be being a prick right now, in certain eyes.

But I guess at my very basest, most simple desire is that I'd like to continue to read Tim's contributions right here on this informal forum. If anyone's behavior stands in the way of that, I am going to voice my opinion about it. I'm sorry for making this a public matter and unlocking this thread, but for one reason or another I felt it warranted it.

Maybe some day, you, Tim and I can have a beer together and listen to Comus AND 91X and be civil and have fun.

Lastly, I really enjoy the Steve Miller Band Greatest Hits Volume 2. It reminds me of a summer job I had when I was 16 years old, and of good times. Talk to you guys in a few weeks.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

"i think those posts are pretty mild, quite honestly, considering how completely condescending (and quite wrong, imo) he was in that thread. his claims that i've never heard free jazz or the ccc albums aren't as big an insult as calling him "doughhead" (tho that is a fairly mild thing to call somebody! and if i'm a "prick" for taking tim to task for liking "radio music" then somebody please tell off all the ilm regulars on the dave matthews band thread!), true, but considering the context of the conversation, his basic rhetorical stance to challenge the "credibility" of anyone who dares to defy his "expert" (ha!) status is pure bullshit. sorry, g!, sorry timmy, but I HAVE STUDIED this stuff extensively - tho gee i don't have a master's degree."

I think if you reread that thread, I was dispassionate with you until becoming exasperated with your condescension towards me. It was only after this that I called you a pedantic fussbudget and made the joke, "Maybe you haven't heard many free jazz records." I never "made the claim" that you had never heard Creative Construction Company. Why are you saying that I did?

As for this bullshit about my "basic rhethorical stance to challenge the credibility of anyone who dares to defy my expert status" -- do you really believe this shit? Because, frankly, it's a bunch of crap and it pisses me off. I guess I did this by making the joke about whether you'd heard many free jazz records? And the fact that I made this joke means that this is my "basic rhetorical stance" in talking with people on here? I guess you weren't challenging my credibility in constantly making the same joke about how no one should take anything I say seriously because blah blah blah the Killers blah blah blah the radio?

Frankly, I think the whole "those are not improvisations; those are musics with elements of improvisations" was a red herring to begin with. Yes, I didn't understand at first that you were talking about a Bailey-an definition of "improvisation." I'm still not sure what it had to do with what the Stylus reviewer said or what I said, however.

“I remember one time - it might have been a couple times - at the Fillmore East in 1970, I was opening for this sorry-ass cat named Steve Miller. Steve Miller didn't have his shit going for him, so I'm pissed because I got to open for this non-playing motherfucker just because he had one or two sorry-ass records out. So I would come late and he would have to go on first and then we got there we smoked the motherfucking place, everybody dug it.”
