Quoi de neuf?
Que du vieux. Des vieilles guerres et de nouvelles victimes. Des histoires de fantômes.
Pas de nouvelles, pas de rentrée lactée. Pas d’actualité.
Des actes.
De l’antique. Du névralgique. Du fruit et de la chair.

earlier stuff on the thread was from old métal hurlant then I free-associated a bit at lambiek 's excellent comiclopedia http://lambiek.net/artists/index.htm.

The last big bunch I posted were scanned from journal de tintin. I was subscribed to that from age 5 to age 8. I was also subscribed to spirou magazine from 8 to early teen but I haven't scanned anything from that yet. sort of an introspective thing to do, how certain images stayed with me .

Thinking about all that I remembered about a magazine that I could have recieved at one point when i was about 12, (a suivre), the progressive comic magazine with close association with literature and luckily I found I can download that over the internets. "general culture trip"! the last 10 images or so are from there. the general idea of the thread is to try to truly reflect the multitude that can be expressed in comics, and pwning ilc in passing by, so I'll just continue with that for a litle while, with other old franco-belgian comic mags and current acclaimed works and stuff . when the thread will be done I'll do a recap with proper references.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 27 October 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

I just skim read this but yes ecofeminism seems provide good , fun intuitions to read the old trend of erotic science fiction and fantasy comics like druuna / heavy metal. They would have a field day with old "kiss comix"; I want to represent diversity of "lines" and "internal worlds" that is out there but I censor myself quite a bit here, I try to avoid most pornographic or psychological /physical violent stuff , prefer to search for the imagination, the creative that is more "solar". that said on ecofeminism I agree with james hughes:
"Although many feminists have been influenced by ecofeminist bioLuddism and left Luddite arguments about the danger of corporate technology, there is a broader feminist constituency that sees no contradiction between women’s empowerment and using technology to expand their control over their lives."

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y49/picturesref/lolbutts.jpg

S. (Sébastien Chikara), Friday, 27 October 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

i agree w/ you, the sex in druuna is 90% gratuitous. there is a point to her sexuality but obv we don't need to see quite a bit of the stuff that's in there. for some reason i feel like it's handled well in druuna, or at least w/ much much more identification with (and much much less objectification of) druuna. compared anyway to something like riverstone, which is just mad crepe-y and gross.

on the other hand all the "druuna sketchbooks" serpiere is trying to push are just utterly crepe-y, especially the one called "serpiere + druuna: the artist and his daughter" (not the exact title but you get the idea).

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 27 October 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

also i agree w/ you in theory about violence (maybe why i like heavy metal-style comics so much better than US comics) but then what about dudes like geoff darrow and peter chung? i just find that illustration style irresistible, content aside.

"content aside" seems to be a big issue for me these days...

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 27 October 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know much about geoff darrow except that I liked his work @ transmetropolitan, I think Peter Chung's few parody of heroic action movies compensate for like his commissioned short films where ultra-violence is used closer to the first degree .

I try to find something online about a non-aeon one-shot short film Peter Chung made, possibly for "liquid tv" where we are presented a heroic character that goes it on a fight only to lose then the camera's sympathy shifts to back-up the winner, who goes into another fight, lose, and again the camera's allegance shifts to the new champion and it goes on like that for some time
anyway i learned soon enough on this thread that the production of interesting comics is so considerable that I have no problem getting over-stimulated, no matter how "baroque" the rules and criterias i decide to follow

S. (Sébastien Chikara), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

^ that was definitely an Aeon Flux segment

PRKLTR (flezaffe), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

rlie? it's frustrating not being able to come up with relevant "keywords" right now but i am not discouraged.

xpost that made me think of a gallery of images from manga Blame! i made once where i was just faithful to my own interests ; looking for nice architecture, creative technologies and stuff like that

S. (Sébastien Chikara), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

it's a short from the 2nd season of aeon flux called "war".

i got the 3-disc box this summer and only recently got tired of re-watching the episodes. i never saw the 3rd season episodes - the half hour ones with vocals - and I didn't realize they would ultimately become so much more appealing than the short violence episodes.

the final episodes are pretty much non-violent - there's very very little in the way of killing or gore - and very heavy on the faux-philosophy.

hallucinogenic depopulated landscapes + weird biomorphic technology + strange angular people + incomprehensible dialogue + silver-age sci-fi plots recycled straight out of philip jose farmer or philip k dick etc = RECIPE FOR SUCCESS!!
