has anyone in the nyc seen these dudes?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil has.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

where is the H, he hasn't attempted to correct or belittle me yet today... hmmm.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

he was at a little rager last night, a rager named casiotone for the painfully alone.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry that I couldn't get here sooner to hear you being incorrect about bands or rambling on about Barry Bonds. I was at Burritoville and now I have diarrhea. Man, Lauren is a treat!

hstenc!l (deangulberry), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

roffler!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the juxtaposition of those last two sentences is worrying, somewhat.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

everybody left after casiotone and missed the Amber Smith who were completely amazing. it was pretty depressing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't get into them.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand. Punk rock energy. Beatles/Big Star Power Pop hooks, great vocal harmonies, great songs. Fun. Oh well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, i realize that they're very good at what they're doing but it leaves me cold. there's something important missing, i'm not sure what.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds like that first teenage fanclub record that came out on matador circa 1990.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

there's no everything flows, though.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

among other influences, yeah. that's not a terrible thing, though. Can't really name many other rock bands in NYC now playing that kind of pop/rock that well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanted to stay for amber smith...then Carey told me not to.

i'm not one to argue.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

RE: TT

Is their track on They Keep Me Smiling a good representation of the whole album?

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the record is pretty bad I think, and the first time I saw them (opening for Reigning Sound) I didn't like them, and until last night I agreed w/ Lauren totally. But last night I thought they were really good, and had more energy than before or on the record. Again, it's hard to put one's finger on it. Lawrence Kim, I think his name is, is really good at guitar, when he did a solo.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Thursday, 5 August 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the record was recorded in barry london's kitchen with lawrence playing guitar. if you go to the website you can hear a recording they did for Fearless TV which is better. Aren't you supposed to be working with Version City, btw?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean bass, Lawrence played bass.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought I was going to pass out after seeing casiotone, it was so hot and crowded.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 6 August 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

jeah, I am.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

then you gotta pretend you love them! what kind of marketing is "the record is pretty bad I think"?

try "the record catches the band in an adolescent state and was recorded with true DIY enthusiasm".

it's all about the spin.

But yes, they are astonishingly good musicians, even when he's showing off, Lawrence plays with completely controlled restraint.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 6 August 2004 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

starting off your set with a cover (even though it's a good cover): kinda dud.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

which cover song did they do? also, today is my last day working, so now I can say whatever I want.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Friday, 6 August 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

their first song was an Eno cover.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

about shit, 12-3 years ago, i saw this band from tejas (sixteen deluxe) open with a really rocking version of "here come the warm jets" and i thought it was really great!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

that's what this band did. So ghey.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

That was their soundcheck, they announced it right away "this is our soundcheck"

Playing a fantastic version of Needle in Camel's Eye as a means of proving they know their shit before playing twee big star power-pop meets terry reid classic rock as a way of getting the attention of jaded brooklynites? Classic. When they opened for a sold out Unicorns show they closed with the Eno song as well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

not "Here Come the Warm Jets" at all.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ah whatever, I was outside, just could tell it was Eno.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the fact that their needle in a camel's eye is so fantastic is part of the problem - for me, it just throws into sharper relief that something crucial isn't there.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway, back to Terrestrial Tones - I like their one song on H!sham's comp., was sorta bored by 'em live tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

three mile pilot's last song i saw them play (no encore) was "by this river".

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

few bands could live up to a song like that. But I think they do. The first song they played after the soundcheck is their least interesting song, their set got better and better as they went on, including a new song incredibly cowbelled out.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

if you were inside, joel, you may have appreciated it more. you also would've known it was a soundcheck.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

does it matter if it was a soundcheck or not? Jesus h. fuckin' Christ, dan!

they were better than the other two non-Casiotowen bands but me (and my friends) wanted to get drinks elsewhere. Big deal.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean jeez dude Dan you know I love you, I'll catch them another time.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, Terrestrial Tones is teh WORST fuckin name EVER.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 6 August 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not a big deal. You said it was kinda dud, I was pointing out it was their soundcheck, that's all. I do think it matters and I also think starting that way is a good idea, I think it's their deliberate attempt to get the attention of people who usually wouldn't pay attention, by stating "we know this stuff as well" up front. Your saying they were "dud" and "ghey" when you weren't even watching: kinda dud!

I'm not taking this personally, nothing to do with our relationship! It has to do with disparaging yet influential comments made about a band I care about. If an opinion is informed(such as Lauren's, who has seen them a few times) then it's valid. If I think it's baseless, I'm gonna say otherwise. You'd do the same thing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

man I feel like shit today.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 August 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)
