I blanked horribly yesterday in my job interview when the hacker man asked me where the password hashes were stored in the OS X filesystem.

it's /etc/passwd.db

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Tom, I am having such OS X woe right now. Somehow my firewall rules fucked up my system :((((

DAEREST V1CE MAGAZINE!!!!! (ex machina), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I totally just click on the checkboxes with my firewall. The only thing I've ever made my own changes to are for icecast and vnc. What have you got going on? Is this more to do with you trying to captain crunch the t-zones?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Yea, it was a few rules to make sure my machine wouldn't try to contact the WAP gateway on any other interface. When I'm really desperate for bandwidth I use multiple interfaces for batch downloading on one and normal use on another.

DAEREST V1CE MAGAZINE!!!!! (ex machina), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

i think 75% of noize board is mac friendlee

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

yo cutts, i need that ipodz programme you were using to pulla stuffa offa that thing.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I went over to Joe's place in park slope and he spent the whole time sucking shit off my iPod while I had underwear pillow fite with his roomie.

DAEREST V1CE MAGAZINE!!!!! (ex machina), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

yo cutts, i need that ipodz programme you were using to pulla stuffa offa that thing.

aiiiiiight!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

cutty, what are you using for that? i was using podworks for a bit, but it had a 30 day free trial period. now i'm using iPodRip which you're allowed to use 10 times, but as long as i don't turn it off or restart my comp, i can keep using it.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

I use a script.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

i use podworks, and i paid the $6 to register it.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

sucker

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

adam, what's yr script? how's it work?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I can't remember. Someone linked to it on ILE ages ago. You just highlight the songs you want to import and then assign them a playlist in itunes. Easy! and free!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

PODWORKS ROOLS. PLAYLISTS ARE DUMB.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

FREE THINGS RULE. SLAYER ARE DUMB.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I should add that you can enter "library" in the playlist field and hey! presto.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I GOT PODWORKS FOR FREE. ENGLANDS ARE DUMB.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

adam, not necessarily mac related, but where do you keep yr 100Gigs of mp3s? do you have an external hard drive?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Also - DVDs.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

must borrow yr harddrive

heh, i said hard

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Everybody should be using InVisibles to do everything. It lets you drag and drop shit from your iPod in the Finder like it was no thang. It's all just stored in a hidden directory! See!

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

It is also handy for when you think you might want to actually look at private/etc/passwd.db, or something.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

not bad.

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

anyone have an easy/cheap/free way to convert WMA's to MP3s? i haven't been able to find anything.

team jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

iTunes?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

easywma?

Yawn (Wintermute), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

iTunes won't play WMA's, RJG.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if itunes will play wma with the quicktime windows media extension: http://www.flip4mac.com/

Houdini Gordonii (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

what happened to macbuds.com?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

i just did a big saturday night research project on turning realmedia into wav files on a mac - the "easy" answer i found involved downloading lots of sketchy-sounding 3rd party codecs and lots of playing around in terminal.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

someone at work (on a pc) told me to burn it to disc and then rip it to mp3, but i don't even know how to convert it to aiff audio files. maybe if i had toast?

team jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

that's what i do...

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

if the wmas are shorter than 10 minutes each, you could use the trial version of audio hijack to record them to aiff

Yawn (Wintermute), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

WMA IS THE WORST

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

xpost - that looks like the answer. thanks

yes cutty, it is.

team jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 22:08 (twenty years ago)

maybe it's only PC iTunes that automatically converts WMAs

I am not a mac fiend, sorry

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 22:08 (twenty years ago)

pc itunes will definitely do this. I'm sure mac itunes will too.
