NO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND I DON'T WANT TO LISTEN TO MUSIC ON AN IPOD, KTHX.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 23 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

go to a used music shop and try out some drum machines and keys to get a feel for what you might like. then try ebay, use harmony central.com for reviews and price guide. the korg electribe series is a good one and all over ebay. i use my the synth one all of the time when i am just sitting around the house. -xpost-

kephm (kephm), Thursday, 23 June 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Do you do computer music Tim?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 June 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Dog.

G!, no, I don't, though I'd consider it. For me, it seems like it would be convenient to just have devices running through amps or P.A.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 23 June 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Oh good (I don't either).

Try a microkorg for a good cheap electro keyboard.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 June 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

my friend got this, but we haven't actually used it yet.

is it any good?

a real bear behind the microphone (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 June 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

hello

TOMBOT has an entire crate of musical gear for making exactly what you speak of.

i have no idea what is in it or what any of it does but i know it is gear to make techno electro music. i know there's a microphone that's about it.

also he has no idea that i'm posting this but seriously you can have it if you want it.

a real bear behind the microphone (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 June 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

i'd rather use a laptop and drum machine simulator for the beats.

i want one of those maudio ozonic firewire keyboard midi and audio interface thingies. i need to go play with one first tho.

msp (mspa), Friday, 24 June 2005 05:18 (twenty years ago)

yeah that's what i have, m.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 24 June 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

boss dr-660 > alesis sr-16, and boss = more sounds.

Conventional wisdom says the Korg electribe series is preferred over the Roland box's, when discussing new, cheapish, all-in-one drum machine w/ a bit of synth.

Go the used route:

Sequential Circuits Drumtracks @100 dollars.
Roland Alpha Juno/Juno 1 @ 120 dollars.

not as versatile and you'll need something to sequence with, but this will sounds miles more interesting then any new box.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

It depends how much $$$ you want to spend.

Cheap:
Synths - Casio CZ101 or 1000, Yamaha TX81z, Yamaha SY77 (has built-in sequencer w/disc drive) (also can replicate any DX7 sound)
Kork S3 drum m/c/sequencer combination thing (sounds great & is ridiculously cheap!)

middle:
Waldorf Micro-Q (I have one of these and it fucking pwnz)
Alesis Ion (likewise)
dunno what's good in more expenisve sequencers & drum machines @ the moment

Alt:
Get "Reason"

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 24 June 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

120 bpm :(

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 24 June 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Gygax!,

What can you tell me about the arpeggiator on the MicroKorg? Does it have different arpeggio patterns and you can program the tempo and the note value? Also, how easy is the vocoder to use?

Thx! - T.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 26 June 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

BUMPING THIS IN HOPE THAT GYGAXOR WILL SEE MY QUESTION!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

It has programmable arpeggio patterns/sequencer and yes the tempo is all adjustable. Vocoder = easy (even easier if you can play and sing at the same time which is not exactly my forte).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm getting really psyched about my setup. Improved percussion with distortion over fat beats = rule

THE JAMES DEAN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (ex machina), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I got ripped off on Ebay and now I am dishing out some serious justice. NOBODY fucks with ARL on Ebay, NOBODY!

I will have my "setup" soon.

It's kind of funny if you don't go for software theeeese daaaays

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I feel silly even using a hardware sampler but I want to use an analog mixer and I like the simplicity of being able to whack at pads to accent the (laptop) sequenced beats being played.

THE JAMES DEAN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

MicroKorg looks like a rad deal. Want something on which I can program percussion for a whole track, though. Not just drum sound percussion but synth sound percussion like Kraftwerk. Oh oh what should get?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 2 July 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

korg electribe drum machine er-1 is cheap, easy and great at bleepy bloopy analogy percussion.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 2 July 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

THX DAN U ROCK!
