Tim Ellison! I thought of you the other day. I was in my local and I heard this pretty amazing sounding song. And then I was like, shit, this is Michael Stipe singing! What is this, this really sweet sounding modern psych track, complete with a couple bar fuzz guitar break?? THIS is an R.E.M. song? Turns out (after some frantic Googling and Amazon.com sample-listening) it was "THE LIFTING" by R.E.M. REally fucking sweet song! Who knew? I guess you did, since you been singin their praizes for so long! It almost makes me want to investigate the last couple R.E.M. recs...

Sometimes I feel like just about the only person--apart from maybe some people in their fan club or what have you--who thinks that they've always been, on the whole, pretty damn fucking STELLAR. The whole critical reaction to their last album was very frustrating to read - ILM mirrors that, too. I really think people were blindered by some percpetions of their aesthetic - some of the stylistic evocations in the songs plus the album graphics. I wonder what the band thinks of it!

Re. the last few albums: a lot of people would probably say that Up is the great one, but I think they've just been getting better and that Reveal is better than Up and Around the Sun is better than Reveal.

And I would recommend going to see them live whenever there is a chance. They've had a solid lineup for a while and it is a killer band. Drummer is Bill Rieflin from Ministry - really awesome drummer. And Scott Macaughey) from Young Fresh Fellows on guitar and Ken Stringfellow from the Posies on keyboards.

There is an awesome new Teahouse next to Streetlight Records in Santa Cruz called The Attic. They have like 50 hand-picked teas from around the world.

But Green Tea is great. Green Macha is incredibly bitter and creamy but is probably my favorite (I think we have a tea thread on here actually).
