Like what with the ELO again? Did some older DJ play it at a cool Williamsburg party once?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

what are you talking about?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

WHAT ARE U TALKING ABOUT BROLIE?

ddb (ddb), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

ELO has been hip in williamsburg for a couple of years.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Right. So why?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

ITS BEEN :HIP" SINCE THAT DUMB COMMERCIAL....AND WILLIAMSBURG HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT...FOR ONCE.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Everything is hip in Brooklyn, BITCH IS HUGE, HUUGE!

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

ELO has been hip to me ever since i heard "don't bring me down" as a kid.

BRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEE!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

In 1996, Lilys (a band from Philly) released this great retro-psych-pop record called "Better Can't Make Your Life Better" which had more than a few homages to ELO's Eldorado. That was the first sniff I got of any revival.

They really are a great band.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

What song was in a commercial?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

There was a VH1 commercial with a bunch of balding dudes in a station wagon, and the "uncool" guy wants to listen to ELO, but the other guys all high five and go "HOOTIE!!!"

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

HOOTIE?

no tech! (ex machina), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I swear.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

love teh bk hootie commercial.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

It'd be great if the commercial had a part II where the it says "FIVE YEARS LATER ..." and you see the Hootie guys all depressed in an empty pub with Hootie playing and the one other guy is chillin' in a hot tub with two fine chicks and ELP's "Pictures at an Exhibition" is playing in the background.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Uh, or something by ELO, even ...

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I am confused and need to get out of the house.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

ELP should be big with teh hipsters, whomever they are.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

They probably will be.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

naw i doubt it. prog fans are too geeky.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, actually, I was just going to say probably not as much as ELO, because ELO are still catchy pop.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

anyway prolly people get this stuff at academy in bklyn. it's an ok store. it was better when rsg was there, tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

One phenomenon no one will ever be able to explain to me is the "electroclash" craze of several years back

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

it's pretty easy. bad music + bad drugs + bad haircuts + larry tee = electroclash

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

i sleep next to a bunch of ELO albums.

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 8 July 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

i get my hip influences from party djs and commercials

larry bundgee (bundgee), Friday, 8 July 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

also internet message boards and law firms

larry bundgee (bundgee), Friday, 8 July 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Jeff was so punk rock in high school.
I also liked riding around in his dad's car because he was an undercover cop or an investigator or something and Jeff always knew about the coolest music before everyone else.

OH NO!!!!!! (ddb), Friday, 8 July 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

i get my hip influences from party djs and commercials

From the latest insound spam:

The 10 Songs That Will Change Your Life But That You Probably Have Never Heard
Look, I'm sure some of you know some of these songs but I'm guessing most of you missed out on these. The bad news is that you've been shortchanged. Basically, it's like you've lived a life without ice cream or sunrises or ladybugs. The good news is that we're here to change all that. Right now.

(Feel free to mention these songs at eclectic dinner parties, second dates with English grad students and vaguely contentious, totally competitive conversations with part-time music bloggers. You can also actually listen to these songs if you want.)

American Analog Set: 'Blue Chaise' from From Our Living Room to Yours
Sounds like angels in heaven. I know. I've seen Flatliners.

David Kilgour: 'Today Is Gonna Be Mine' from Feather In The Engine
The happiest song ever written. Reason enough to move to New Zealand.

Pixeltan: 'That's The Way I Like It' from Get Up/Say What 12"
Dirty. Fat. And totally awesome. Everything that was great about the '80s. But made in 2000something.

The Constantines: 'Tank Commander' from Shine A Light
In a world where nothing matters at all. This one almost does.

Joe Christmas: 'A Pretty Girl Never Lights Her Own Cigarette' from North To The Future
Something about those Christian rockers. I mean, they really believe. It's just heartbreaking,

The Feelies: 'Slow Down' from The Good Earth
I switched to Citibank a day after I saw the ad with this song in it. I'm sold. Citibank. Live Rich.

Redd Kross: 'St. Lita Ford Blues' from Born Innocent
Pretty sure they don't hit a single right note through the 180 seconds of this one. It's like how in American Beauty where the garbage was supposed to be symbolic and perfect. Except it really is here.

Bob Seger: 'Feel Like A Number' from Stranger In Town
Working in a factory. For the man. Finishing a shift. Grabbing a beer and some wurst. Shooting pool and slapping high fives.

Black Heart Procession: 'It Was A Crime I Never Told You About The Diamonds In Your Eyes' from 2
For every time you wanted to say something really profound after a break up but weren't smart or poetic enough to say it yourself.

The Au Pairs: 'It's Obvious' from Playing With a Different Sex
Better than anything Gang of Four ever did. It's true. The Slits aren't even in their league. The best dance punk single of the '70s. Probably the best ever.

no tech! (ex machina), Friday, 8 July 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

(xp - you actually read those insound things?) it's true! my questionably state employed father, my formerly "so punk rock" friend and i arrested djs and stole their jamz

larry bundgee (bundgee), Friday, 8 July 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I read them to SNEAR. I finally managed to unsubscribe today because the unsubscribe page had so many flash banner ads that it didn't load right on dialup!
