"BAND OF GOLD"
Freda Payne
released 9/19/1970
6 weeks at #1 - 19 weeks on chart

Now that you're gone
All that's left is a band of gold
All that's left of the dreams I hold
Is a band of gold
And the memories of what love could be
If you were still here with me

You took me from the shelter of a mother, I had never known
The love of any other
We kissed after taking vows
But that night on our honeymoon
We stayed in separate rooms

I wait in the darkness of my lonely room
Filled with sadness, filled with gloom
Hoping soon that you'll walk
Back through that door
And love me like you tried before

Since you've been gone
All that's left is a band of gold
All that's left of the dreams I hold
Is a band of gold
And the dream of what love could be
If you were still here with me

Ooh, don't you know that I wait in the darkness of my lonely room
Filled with sadness, filled with gloom
Hoping soon that you'll walk
Back through that door
And love me like you tried before

Since you've been gone
All that's left is a band of gold
All that's left of the dreams I hold
Is a band of gold
And the dream of what love could be
If you were still here with me

Since you've been gone
All that's left is a band of gold

"Band of Gold" > "Since U Been Gone"

And yet surely "Band of Gold" was not some big OMG #1 in P 'n' J thing in nineteen seventy-whatever. And surely this was not attributable to the RAMPANT ROCKISM amongst critics of the time. It was merely the fact that "Band of Gold" was not the best song of the year. Just like "Since U Been Gone," which is not even as good as "Band of Gold," is not *THE BEST SONG* this year!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

"band of gold" totally slays.

38 Special
Second Chance

Since you been gone
I feel my life slipping away
I look to the sky
And everything is turnin' grey
All I made was one mistake
How much more will I have to pay
Why can't you think it over
Why can't you forget about the past

When love makes this sound baby
A heart needs a second chance
Don't put me down babe
Can't you see I love you
Since you've been gone I've been in a trance
This heart needs a second chance
Don't say it's over I just can't say goodbye

So this is love
Standing in the pouring rain
I fooled on you
But she never meant a thing
And I know I ain't got no right
To ask you to sympathize
But why can't you think it over
Why can't you forget about the past

When love makes this sound baby
A heart needs a second chance
Don't put me down baby
Can't you see I love you
Since you been gone I've been in a trance
This heart needs a second chance
Don't say it's over I just can't say goodbye

I never loved her
I never needed her
She was willing and that's all there is to say
Don't forsake me
Please don't leave me now
A heart needs a second chance

Yeahhhhhh you've been gone and I've been in a trance
This heart needs a second chance
Don't say it's over I just can't say goodbye
Please forgive me and forget it
I was wrong and I admit it
Why can't we talk it over
Why can't we forget about, forget about the past

(A heart needs a second chance)
When love makes this sound baby
(A heart needs a second chance)
Don't put me down babe
You've been gone I've been in a trance
This heart needs a second chance
Don't say it's over I just can't say goodbye

(A heart needs a second chance)
When love makes this sound babe
(A heart needs a second chance)
(A heart needs a second chance)
When love makes this sound baby
(A heart needs a second chance)

"Since You've Been Gone"

Since you've been gone
Well, I feel like I've been chewing on tinfoil
Since you've been gone
It's like I got a great big mouthful of cod liver oil
Oh well, I'm feelin like I stuck my hand
Inside a blender and turned it on
You know, I've been in a buttload of pain
Since you've been gone

(Since you've been gone)
I couldn't feel any worse if you dropped
A two-ton bowling ball on my toes
(Since you've been gone)
It couldn't hurt any more if you shoved
A red-hot cactus up my nose

Since you've been gone
Well, it feels like I'm getting tetanus shots every day
Since you've been gone
It's like I've got an ice cream headache that won't go away
Ever since that day you left me
I've been so miserable, my dear
I feel almost as bad as I did
When you were still here

this song totally stinks.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

people really want this song to be good and all the essays and batshit analysis in the world ain't gonna make it so.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Gear so fuckin OTM

the Rainbow song remains great of course.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

it's good, but it's not THAT good.

born-again christians in the old corral (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

the song i've been scratching my head over is "1 thing" -- the beat is fine, but i can't get past that thin, monotonic, whiny singing.

born-again christians in the old corral (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 December 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

i actually like the cherie & marie currie version of the rainbow hit and i like their album cover better. i heart the kelly clarkson song. i've said it before and i'll say it again. it was topz on my list.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 December 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

i just don't get it! i'd heard it many times before i realized that it was the song everyone was flipping out over and while i don't think it's horrible, for me it just doesn't stand out from what surrounds it on the radio.

gear (gear), Thursday, 29 December 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

i actually like the cherie & marie currie version of the rainbow hit

so do i! the whole album's good.

born-again christians in the old corral (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 December 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

i dunno. the kelly song just hit me immediately. purepoppleasure. her voice, the music...it was refreshing to hear pop-rock that wasn't that icky pop-punk or emopunk or numetal crap that bugs me so much.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 December 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

anything that wasn't green day was gonna stand out to me. (tho i like some old green day songs. the new stuff is boring crud and it's all over the place.)

plus, kelly can really sing. that made it stand out as well.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 December 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

you should be a judge on american idol.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 29 December 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

i like kelly c's early singles, the ones the rock critics didn't like or didn't notice. but i have a high tolerance for schmaltzy ballads.

born-again christians in the old corral (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 December 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

true story: JBR made me a mix once that had twenty tracks, each track being 'i believe i can fly' by r. kelly

gear (gear), Thursday, 29 December 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

i wish that were true!

born-again christians in the old corral (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 December 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
Okay, I know you wish you were this cutting edge but I *JUST* heard this song this weekend and was pleasantly surprised... good Albini/Brad Wood drum sound and guitar tones, and the lyrics aren't horrible (aside from the pretty weak "I'm so movin' on" and "Shut your mouth" lines).

Is it just me or is the chorus a really mellow version of "Tame" by the Pixies? Also has some kind of "Everlong" thing happening that I can't quite put my finger on...

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 12 June 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

the evil swedish pop formula for "since u been gone" goes: interpol (verses) + pop emo (chorus) + "maps" (bridge) -/- pink.

actually i think max martin is on record saying it was his way of making a strokes song.

Total Fucking Darkness (sexyDancer), Monday, 12 June 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

I think the chorus sounds funny because you (over)think the song's gonna be in D but it's actually in G after all that (over)thinking.
