Listening to Ghosts from the Sun now, and can't remember ever seeing a thread about them here.

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I don't think we've had a thread, but they've probably been mentioned.

I say classic, personally. They're one of those bands who kind of overwhelms with a glut of material; tons of CDrs, a couple micro-edition LPs... but it's good, a lot of it. There's just no need to be a completist about it.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

they're the ones with the absolutely ridiculous live show right?

msp (mspa), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

i haven't seen 'em live, actually. bad me. it's marcia from double leopards & matt bower (famous for being british.)

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

ok... this is probably not them. i'm thinking of classic noise japanese band with shock tactics.

Hototogisu seem pretty droney to me. Like, if Charalambides were a noise band. Sometimes, I wish they'd change things up a little more (like on the new album, can't remember the name, they sometimes do these guitar riffs that sound pseudo-metal)

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

i'm not so into 'em live but at least it was memorable.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

msp - you mean Hanatarash?

(like on the new album, can't remember the name, they sometimes do these guitar riffs that sound pseudo-metal)

that's the only one i've heard and it sort of bored me. i do love sunroof though. i saw him live as sunroof, opening for vco, best show i've seen in a long time (and it got released as track 1 on the 'ussa' cdr)

amon (eman), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

skullflower was/is better (though i havent heard the new one and am leary)

Dr. Walter Freeman (Grodd), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

the early, pre-Bassett albs seem to be fetching collector scum prices now

hototogisu were my personal highlight of Keenan's subcurrent fest this year - marcia b. kneeling on the floor w./ her gtr and an array of efx boxes while Bower played amps and mikes, creating huge feedback forcefields at super-punishing volume level - dark stuff

in fact i wld go so far as to say that, w/ the latest hototogisu disc, that superb alb collab w/ Tom Carter, and various Dbl Leopards performances, Marcia Bassett is noise rock queen of the world right now - i must try and score some Un

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

that's the plan.

(wow that's bitchy of me but whatever)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah hijokaidan. i never got to hear them but i always liked their name. i think it means "emergency stairs" ?

i've heard the latest skullflower "orange canyon mind", its ok and but passed on buying it.

amon (eman), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

At a recent Sunroof! show I was talking with someone all through the set about how much we hated it and how shit Matthew Bower was. Then we happened to notice that we were standing right next to a minidisc player recording the gig. Oops. Wonder if THAT'LL get released?

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

i heard that some of the u.s. tour shows he did weren't that great. i think i just happened to catch him on a good night. but really, why would you continue to stand there and talk during the set rather than go into the next room or outside?

amon (eman), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

saw bower on guitar being backed up by two of the sunburned hand of the man doodz on drums & second guitar--heavy acid rock action. slayed. he was mediocre when i saw him before that, guitar/heavy effects action.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

We were on the balcony above the stage but did eventually go outside BUT they'd borrowed our AC30 and used all the inputs even though it fucks the amp up so it was justified.
