there are talented poets who have been known to "slam" but the majority of any "slam" is an illiterate orgy of self-loathing drenched in impotent sperm and tears.

if you are going to deliver a self-effacing monologue about politics, please do not try to sound like ani difranco or saul williams while doing it. or else i will give you a hysterectomy/vasectomy with my bare hands.

There are exactly 3 guys in this town that are phenomenal poetry guys that do their thing at these "slams". Then there are 20+ shouty angry sweaty douchers and one girl trying to sound more badass by talking really loud and not understanding why that doesn't work.

i like poetry. i prefer poetics. being a slam poet is no more ridiculous than being a guitar player in a band. the chances of nasty are just as bad. and the sheer numbers of craptastic rock performers leads me to think that at least slam poetry is pretty avoidable.
