WAHT DO YOU THINK OF RENT

pr00de descending a staircase (pr00de), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

HI DERE!!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

the Kiki & Herb cover of "525,600 min-utes" is awesome.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

I am kind of fearing Rent the movie.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

from the other thread, I don't think the cut off year is 1969, it's 1980

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

the only thing the Rent movie has going for it for me is, more singing Law and Order stars, but that's why I like all musicals!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, totally. Especially since they're using most of the original cast members like ten years after the show first opened. Young frustrated bohemians are cool, I guess, but when they're pushing forty...

I wish I had the Larry Kert recording of Company

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

we're currently working on a Rent website. i've only done some boring production stuff for it.

i guess they filmed it here in SF and the wife saw Rosario Dawson at Trader Joes and they got her to come to a big fancy pants party for her work.

oh, and because we're working on the site, every time the guy i work w/publishes the flash file for the site, the fucking theme song starts up and i want to gouge my ears out.

JAXON (jaxon), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Why 1980, Rosemary? Or is that just a general cut-off? 42nd Street debuted that year, IIRC.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

I think Elaine Stritch is a little overrated

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

And Gower Champion died on opening night! Goodbye the Golden Age!

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

And we all know young frustrated bohemians can afford to live in the East Village (even in 1996).

Is that cutoff year when Broadway jumped the shark?

Elaine Stritch's solo show was good.

In 1980-81, I saw "Sugar Babies" and "A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

You could drive a person crazy,
You could drive a person mad.
First you make a person hazy
So a person could be had,
Then you leave a person dangling sadly
Outside your door,
Which could only make a person gladly
Want you even more.
I could understand a person
If it's not a person's bag.
I could understand a person
If a person was a fag.
But worse 'n that,
A person that
Titillates a person and then leaves her flat
Is crazy,
He's a troubled person,
He's a truly crazy person himself.

When a person's personality is personable,
He should not sit like a lump.
It's harder than a matador coercin' a bull
To try to get you off of your rump.
So single and attentive and attractive a man
Is everything a person could wish,
But turning off a person is the act of a man
Who likes to pull the hooks out of fish.

Knock-knock! Is anybody there?
Knock-knock! It really isn't fair.
Knock-knock! I'm workin' all my charms.
Knock-knock! A zombie's in my arms.
All that sweet affection!
What is wrong?
Where's the loose connection?
How long, O Lord, how long?
Bobby-baby-Bobby-bubbi-Bobby,

You could drive a person buggy,
You could blow a person's cool.
Like you make a person feel all huggy
While you make her feel a fool.
When a person says that you upset her,
That's when you're good.
You impersonate a person better
Than a zombie should.
I could understand a person
If he wasn't good in bed.
I could understand a person
If he actually was dead.
Exclusive you!
Elusive you!
Will any person ever get the juice of you?
You're crazy,
You're a lovely person,
You're a moving,
Deeply malajusted,
Never to be trusted,
Crazy person yourself.

Bobby is my hobby and I'm givin' it up!

It's funny because it's true!!

Is that song from Company, R? There's a Rachel's piece on The Sea and the Bells that has a little portion that my parents swear sounds just like the melody to "Bobby come on over for dinner!"

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go.

To right the unrightable wrong,
To love pure and chaste from afar,
To try when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star.

This is my quest,
To follow that star --
No matter how hopeless,
No matter how far.

To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march
Into hell for a heavenly cause.

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will be peaceful and calm
when I'm laid to my rest.

And the world will be better for this,
that one man scorned and covered with scars
still strove with his last ounce of courage.
To reach the unreachable star.

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go.

To right the unrightable wrong
To be better far than you are
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star.

This is my quest, to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
To be willing to give when there's no more to give
To be willing to die so that honor and justice may live

And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star.

I have personally been in two musicals: South Pacific and Guys and Dolls.

i've been in anything goes, peter pan, and annie. and a couple other ones nobody's ever heard of.

also in the teen chorus in BYE BYE BIRDIE despite being only in fifth grade because my VOICE was so GOLDEN and BARITONE. only other fifth grader played a 10 year old!

Once Upon a Mattress, ha.

Black boys fill me up
Black boys are so damn yummy
They satisfy my tummy
I've got such a sweet tooth when it comes to men
Once I tried a diet of white men so sweet
But I went nearly crazy I went nearly crazy

I can't imagine how much Paul Lynde must've rocked in the stage version of "Bye Bye Birdie" (where, told the story of The Princess and the Pea by the 10-year-old son he was forced to share a bed with, he hissed "Now I feel just like a princess!").

The haunting refrain "the demon barber of fleet street" is so noize and the whole routine of cast switching between playing instruments & acting was way radical and awesomely entertaining.
