gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 September 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

aww g! i discussed that song in a presentation for my musics of india and the west class back in college.

tehRZA gibbons (tehresa), Monday, 12 September 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Did you consider "Tomorrow Never Knows" or "Within You Without You"?

Earlier today I was eating at a place that was playing Zeppelin III and "Friends" came on, that's got a pretty intense hippy-dippy "raga"/"hey let's go to India" feel.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 September 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

DEFEND THE INDEFENSIBLE:

"I’d like to go to india
Live in a big white house in the forest
Drink gin and tonic and play a grand piano
Read a few books
Far from what saddens my heart
Try to live away from it

Find a new girl
Who says she feels the same
Get to know her after the trip
Bathe in a forest pool
Her life a part of mine
And let no one know until I’m gone"

the reason i was talking about norwegian wood was that it was the first song in which the beatles used the sitar. the whole point of the presentation was that while the beatles usually get credit for pioneering the "indian" sound and were the first to use an actual sitar, people were exploring the sound at same time or before them.

Early 1965: Yardbirds explore medieval liturgical chant and Indian music

January 1965: Ray Davies writes the Kinks’ “See My Friends,” using controlled feedback to create sitar drone in guitar

June 1965: Yardbirds release “Heart full of Soul”

July 1965: “See My Friends” released

October 1965: The Beatles record “Norwegian Wood” (first pop record with sitar)

1966: The Kinks “Fancy” released (Face to Face)

1966: The Beatles “Love You To” (Revolver)

tehRZA gibbons (tehresa), Monday, 12 September 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

oops i left some out

1967: The Beatles “Within You Without You” (Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band)

August 1967: The Beatles meet with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

1968: The Beatles “The Inner Light”

1968: Moody Blues release In Search of the Lost Chord

JEANNE (ex libris), Friday, 25 August 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

A minor.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 25 August 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Dudes, that is a Charvel Surfcaster 12-string!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 25 August 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

You can tell it's a Charvel because of those triangular inlays, just like you can tell it's the Casbah because of the button leather.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 25 August 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

^^ have a black friend who claims he witnessed "black people moshing", bottle smashing, and ripping up booths in a fancy atlanta club after this song was played. freaked him out.
