oh man I can't imagine this. I hated having braces so much. The tightening, the inside of my mouth getting cut up, using wax to smoothe the braces and the very worst part, the taking of the mold. They push the tray into your mouth filled with the mold cream, then the push the trau up to the roof of your mouth, making the cream push back to the back of your throat. BREATH THROUGH YOUR NOSE they'd say, which was less then easy when permanently stuffed up with allergies. Then it'd start to harden, followed by the orthodontists assistant pulling the mold off your teeth with a feeling like they were taking some teeth as well. Then you get the hardened mold bits all in your mouth.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 18 September 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

there's just something ineffably gross about the braces/beard combo

that mold always disgusted me too. i went through braces, retainer, etc. and then a couple years ago when, for lack of insurance, i went to some discount dentist to get a half-assed cleaning, this guy had the nerve to tell me that my orthodontist had done a shitty job. i kinda wanted to grab that little hook instrument and poke it up his nostril.

amon (eman), Sunday, 18 September 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

I never finished...had my braces removed and was told to use the retainer every night. Never used it. Went back and the orthodontist said "if you don't start using your retainer the teeth will shift back and you'll have to go back to braces." I never went back. I really don't mind, my teeth look find and do their job. However he left a bit of glue on one of the teeth that for some reason he couldn't get off, and everytime I've gone to a different dentist since then and gotten a different oral hygienist they've all noticed and they've all said "I can take that off" and they've drilled and picked and it's never come off so usually I say, no, really, it's fine, just leave it.

i never had braces. i kinda felt left out because everyone else had them! i missed my opportunity to call people "braceface" and "metalmouth."

some enterprising young fellow needs to come up with a grill/braces combo

ugh. braces. anybody else have that whole mouth widener thingy? it's this vice of some kind that sits in the roof of your mouth and every night we'd stick this little key in this whole of the gizmo and move it and it basically moved the roof of my mouth apart.

fuckin conan the barbarian coulda done a more gentle job.

i was the worst patient too cause i hated those rubber bands and would never wear them. it took forever.

i had this permanent retainer glued on the inside of my lower teeth... it's still there actually. part of it's broken off in fact. I SWALLOWED RETAINER WIRE on accident.

i need to get that shit removed. at this point i really don't care if i have crooked teeth. they worked fine before.

yep, had it

Jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 19 September 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

but i can one up it. i eventually had jaw surgery to fix all my bite problems (hence the second set of braces)

Jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 19 September 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

one of my younger brothers has the twisty-key palate-cracking apparatus -- he also has this little wire rake thing mounted to the inside of his lower front teeth. it's basically little pointy metal bits. it's supposed to train him to swallow by pushing his tongue against the roof of his mouth instead of pushing his tongue forward. the kids at his school called him "spidermouth" for a while when he first got it.

elmo (allocryptic), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

good load ohmighty.

yeah, i had four teeth removed for my braces thing. but no crazy spider thing. and no full on jaw surgery.

teeth.

msp (mspa), Monday, 19 September 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

i had like 6 teeth removed just to get the braces....and then like dan a joel, gave up and never wore the retainer. one of my lower teeth is now a bi off, but seriously.

did you guys have the huge boxing mouthpiece top and bottom retainer thing when they came off? i was supposed to wear it for like 2 days, but didn't. if anyone actually wore that thing as they were supposed to, they are liars. i don't believe them.

bb (bbrz), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

i had just the top retainer thing that came out. i might have used it a couple times. when i was done... i was DONE. sham.

msp (mspa), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

I just had the basic top retainer thing, which I never wore.

Doctorb Ted tried to start some kind of French discussion table at the Court Street S+4rbucks a few years back. His French was terrible.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

One would think with his intricate knowledge of the human jaw, his pronunciation would be better.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 19 September 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I myself had braces for a while to correct the fang-like canines I used to have. Didn't wear the retainer, but my teeth look fine.

I fear dental / orthodontic surgery in my future, though. I was born WITHOUT FIVE ADULT TEETH. All of my eye teeth are decrepit baby teeth, some of which have fallen out. It doesn't show, but I fear ill mouth health in the future.

elmo (allocryptic), Monday, 19 September 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

first, orthodonture is a scam. my sister had PERFECTLY STRAIGHT teeth as a teen and when she went in for the consultation they rec'd giving her braces.

second, i have the best story. i used to hate the widener because it hurt so much, and if my Mom forgot to do it that evening, i certainly wasn't going to remind her.

my cousin in Chicago hated the widener too and in a fit of genius decided he would suffer less by hastening the process. he took the key and wound the lock 6 or 7 times (it was one way, mind you). he was in so much pain they had to take him to the emergency room and take off the device. each turn of that fucker was 1mm so you can imagine the torture he put himself into.
