Better than you might think.

Who saw it?

I saw it last night. It started out like every other blah VH1/whatever thing, crowning VU and the New York Dolls as punk progenitors, but it charmed its way into my heart. I liked seeing Jim Jarmusch and Mary Harron in there. Rollins is always sort of weird/funny/weird. He sort of reminds me of hstencil, in a weird way, in terms of approach.

It made me dig out X-Ray Spex and Richard Hell stuff that I haven't listened to for a while.

Would I like The Pop Group?

that Pop Group track is great, but i wouldn't suggest getting "How Long Will We Tolerate Mass Murder". it loses all the great dub aspects and trades it for super claustrophobic noise. i rarely listen to it. still have yet to hear all of "Y".

The Pop Group were great, and seeing that clip in that movie was awesome. I wrote about that movie on some other threads...some great stuff, Screamers, Alice Bag, Marco Pirroni etc. The chronology is a bit weird, they follow up ny and are talking about post-punk then The Beastie Boys doing Fight before they even mention west coast punk. Then they show Agnostic Front dude say "they think punk stopped in 82" and Thurston says "they think punk stopped in 82 and nothing happened untill Nirvana" and clearly Agnostic Front dude want to talk about how great the 80s CBs hardcore scene was and Thurston's talking about the great american underground of the 80s the led to Nirvana...but Letts takes them at face value and indeed skips from 82 to Nirvana. Then goes onto Blink 182.

Bonus footage on DVD is good but infuriating, adding stuff cut from the interviews pertinent to a million themes, but often including the stuff you've already seen, and by the 12th time you've seen Rollins make the same joke you want to kill yourself.

Yeah, the Screamers looked great! I have never heard of them before. The Agnostic Front guy and Dick Manitoba made me laugh. They gave good East Coast.

I have a copy of "We Got The Neutron Bomb" which has sat on my bookshelf for about two years. Should I read it?

I seemed to identify with Captain Sensible more that ANY of the other 500 people interviewed. I'd love to have a pint with that guy.

yeah, it BARELY touched on american post-punk and didn't talk about uk post-punk/d.i.y. at all, which was odd given how uk-centric the first part was.

rollins was actually funny in this. it's like he stopped being a bonehead and learned to embrace the gayness within.

"I have a copy of "We Got The Neutron Bomb" which has sat on my bookshelf for about two years. Should I read it?"

You should, it's a nice companion piece to "Please Kill Me".
