I've composed some somewhat corny social satire lyrics, but there are a few lines I think are pretty good

Oh these yuppies are driving the people away
Moving in by hundreds and thousands each day
I don’t care much for their kind, but one thing I will say
Is that they’ve brought with them an internet café

Oh an internet café is a place I can go
When ideas run fast and modems run slow
The coffee’s called java and the milk is called lait
A small is a tall and a large is a gran-de

My poetry group, you see, it meets in the back
There are whites, Indians, Asians and even a black,
Jewish and gentile, straight, bi and gay
There’s a whole fucking rainbow in my internet café.

I’d like to go and sit in their "refurbished" parks
Maybe just to scare them, I’ll read from Karl Marx,
Nietzche or Hegel, Heidegger or Sartre,
I’ve got so many books don’t know where to start

So Power wash your brownstones, God sustain your weal,
May He remake your kitchens in copper and steel
May He increase your number, may He soften your pate
While I rot with the masses in my internet cafe

(Nietzsche, that is)

I just hope they don't ban you, Hurting.

Yeah, I'm really, really not sure why I posted this on Noize.

i think a good rule of thumb in lyrics is to avoid talking about the internet too much, and the list of various ethnic groups that are in the cafe is a little too much like that "New York" song by U2. but otherwise, solid, esp. if you sing like mark e. smith

It reminds me a little bit too much of:

I'm drinking a soy latte
I get a double shotty
It goes right through my body
And you know I'm satisfied

I drive my mini cooper
And I'm feeling super duper
Yeah, they tell me I'm a trooper
And you know I'm satisfied

I do yoga and pilates
And the room is full of hotties
So I'm checking out their bodies
And, you know I'm satisfied

I'm digging on the isotope
This metaphysical shit is dope
And if all this can give me hope
You know I'm satisfied

I got a lawyer, and a manager, an agent, and a chef
Three nannies, an assistant, and a driver and a jet,
A trainer and a butler, and a bodyguard of five
A gardener and a stylist
Do you think I'm satisfied?

I'd like to express my extreme point of view
I'm not a Christian, and I'm not a jew
I'm just living out the American dream
And I just realized that nothing. . . is what it seems

So Power wash your brownstones, God sustain your weal,
May He remake your kitchens in copper and steel

I'm sort of proud of this part. Maybe I'll just make a new song starting from there.

Gygax, what song is that?

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

i think it needs more references of teh interweb

If I may say so, the difference between my lyrics and the ones Gygax cited is that those are a send-up of yuppies (which is trite and obvious), while mine are actually a send-up of the urban intelectual types that tend to come in a couple of years before the yuppies and tend to complain about yuppies but don't understand that they're only half a step removed from yuppies themselves (which is brilliant and has never been done before).

I originally heard it to an old-timey melody along the lines of The Coupon Song by Bill Monroe.

i think your narrative needs an ironic twist
