DONE AND DONE

brock (brock), Friday, 11 November 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

done. I wish "The Jupiter Menace" was released on DVD.

Polysix Bad Battery (cprek), Friday, 11 November 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

I joined greencine. it's like netflix but with more obscure (and dirty) movies. same price but it takes a bit longer because it's in cali.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 November 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I've heard about that, but no one has been able to give me examples of what greencine has that netflix doesn't. I'd be interested to know.

Polysix Bad Battery (cprek), Friday, 11 November 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

I have been waiting for "Swamp Thing" for 2 months. :-(

NF dashboard widget rules. My queue is huge.

Anyone have a good logistic solution for dividing 3 queue slots 2 ways?

http://www.bibleexplained.com/other-early/1&2-Kings/Solomon-baby.jpg

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Are you doing multiple queues on one account? Wouldn't it just go round-robin? I haven't messed with this at all.

Polysix Bad Battery (cprek), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

No, its like having 2 separate queues. If I assign 1 DVD to each account and leave the 3rd unassigned, will that make slot 3 round robin?

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Q: Do I have to assign out all of the DVDs allowed in my program?
A: Yes. The total number of DVDs allowed out at-a-time in your program must be fully assigned.

Jdubz (ex machina), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I've heard about that, but no one has been able to give me examples of what greencine has that netflix doesn't. I'd be interested to know.

I'm considering adding mail filters to delete the annoying nyhappenings posters automatically and highlight DANCESELZER and [oh come on jon that's not a very nice thing to call me, nor really that original]

It's not rocket science.

For the record, I am working on a version of nyhappenings with fully user-controlled filtering/blocking and various ways to control what you get. Don't want to get messages from this person? click this button. Only show me messages from these people? click this button. Only show me messages from my friends? Click this button.

But it'll be a while.

four months pass...
I am on GREENCINE:

1) the arthouse to Netflix's megaplex
2) no throttling
3) superfast turnaround (2 days)
4) ship on Saturday (netflix does not)
5) has many OOP dvds

Why does a noisedude in NYC (or SF) need a mail-vid service? Stores and the public liberry network have it all.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

greencine looks INTRIGUING.

esp with looming move to NOWHERESVILLE.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Why does a noisedude in NYC (or SF) need a mail-vid service? Stores and the public liberry network have it all.

See #5, Morbs. Greencine is cheaper and more convenient than a store. It's a local independent business as well (Netflix is a local corporation).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Convenience.

R.I.P. West Village Bird Shaman ]-`: (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Convenience, cost, selection (ie lotta ppl don't wanna be scouring multi-stores/libraries for various titles, you can scour multi-websites and save the time...)

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, DUH.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

god, seriously.

(main thing for me is price though my slowed down consumption of dvds in recent months means it's not as cheapy as it used to be)

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

the real question is why would a nyc/sf person need dvds when they are lucky enough to have anthology or the sf cinematheque?

Because some of us are pop culture-deprived and have decades of catching up to do (cf my queue of Blade/Edward Scissorhands/Ghost in the Shell/Blade Runner/Footloose).

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

blade??? wtf, don't get that shit. what garbage. skip straight to bladeRUNNER.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

i have a copy of Ghost in the Shell.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

i haven't seen ghost in the shell in years. there's a series of it now on cartoon network, right?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

I think so, or there was a year ago.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

I am also on Greencine. Shipping isn't as fast to NYC. But I like their style. I currently have out Closely Watched Trains and Micky and NIcky. Steve forgets:

6) Porn

I rented Cafe Flesh. That was pretty terrible. Jerry Stahl is crazy.

They have streaming movies, but doesn't work on Mac. They recommend really cool shit. And carry 5minutestolive.com titles.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Watched Blade already, but I have "Blade: Trinity" still lined up!!!

I have lots of other stuff, too -- those were just some of the "missed oldies" I spotted.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

wait greencine actually has porn? We had a discussion a while back about how it was weird Netflix didn't have porn, seems like it'd be a huge money maker. I mean I might be vaguely embarassed to rent some of the movies I put on my netflix queue if I had any sense of decency, I imagine the "no one will know" factor is pretty big for services like this so why no porn?

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

didn't kozmo have porn?

send your men of science quick (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

greencine has lots of porn. I wouldn't be suprised if Netflix worried about forging relationships with big corporations or something.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

I have not rented any porn (unless you call 70s blue-stuff like "In The Realm Of The Senses" porn)!

one time we were at this dude's house, it was reminiscent of a tree house crossed with a frat dungeon. anyway they built their own home theatre in one room, projectors etc etc like trillions of dollars of equipment. in fact it was basically the only thing in this enormous house, that and the kegerator. anyway he drags us down because he wants us to check this shit and is all, "in order to truly appreciate this system, you have to watch a truly great movie" blah blah blah so pompous about the whole thing and then he puts on...BLADE 2.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

haha

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

greencine/netflix are MADE for renting crap though. God knows I don't want the alterna-girl or video-store-guy at the local DVD rental place to think I have bad taste in film.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

yeah we didn't see Elektra because of Netflix btw. That was on cable television.

Elektra is actually better than Catwoman in all ways except physical attractiveness of the lead. This is akin to saying dog shit is preferable to cat shit because at least dog shit is usually outdoors.

so do I sign on with greencine or netflix? I quit my local indie video store which was v. v. noize and awesome but the manager was an asshole to me & I couldn't put up with that. is it inevitable signing on with one of these will lead to renting & watching many many bad movies?

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

greencine's only problem is it doesn't have a million warehouses everywhere, so it takes 2/3 days to get you the cd, 2/3 days to get back to them and so on. Of course if you live near the bay area it's all good. I don't care so much because I don't really have enough time...I've had Closely Watched Trains since december! The way I see it, I'm paying for the ability to rent a movie and return it whenever, watch it on my schedule.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 03:02 (nineteen years ago)

that could take a while, I'm on the other side of the country.. but hey, is it cheap? I always take out movies & forget to return them, that is why I quit my indie video store (the bastards charged me $75 in late fees and then the manager told me I was being ridiculous among other insults when I was like "would you please explain exactly how much you charged to a card I never gave you to keep on file & why").

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm in nyc. it costs 15 bucks or so a month to have 2 out at a time. Which means if you get both films on the first of the month. Watch them that night. Send them back the next day, within a week or so you should get 2 more, so if you're lucky you can watch quite a few a month. Or watch one, send it back, while that's going you're watching the other and so on. So it can be cheap, or you can sit on the movie forever. Still no late feets. 15/mo is not so much.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure if more people start using from greencine, they'll expand their distribution centers to the east coast (as Netflix started doing a couple years ago).

That said, it is more ideal for local (Bay Area) customers at the moment. I'm getting 2-day turnarounds... even with a Friday mailback I'll get a new dvd on Monday (whereas with Netflix I'd mailback on Thursday and not see a new DVD until Tuesday).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)
