i saw the masada group play once in college for free. that was pretty rad.

i know zorn is hated, but it always struck me as odd how much his naked city stuff fit in with some of the grind core emo violence stuff i was into in college.

Msp, do you like LAST EXIT?

Did you see this post: Where can I find BOREDOMS tshirts?!

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Is there a way for John Zorn to be in the bottom corner of every thread?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

He could be my friend and give me tips on HTML fixed positions.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

haha, I should make a John Zorn desktop buddy....

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I saw Painkiller play a WFMU benefit w/ Sonic Youth, Dim Stars, Gumball and Lovechild. Painkiller ruled. Or at least, it blew my high school mind.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I was at that show!

SO WAS I!!!!!

I STILL HAVE THE POSTER!!

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

First time I saw the Youth live. Kim tried to kick a photographer in the face and ended up falling into the "Ego Wall" trench.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Jad Fair also did a couple songs that night.

has anyone ever played COBRA? anyone got a set of rules?

howell huser (chaki), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Dude, the rules are word of mouth only direct from Zorn. If you google, I think you can find his rational somewhere.

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

"Msp, do you like LAST EXIT?"

what i have heard is pretty good but at times tedious. longer and jammier. depends on my mood. i have the subharmonic cassette recordings.

honestly, my favorite zorn thing PERIOD is the big gundown. that ownz. but i'm a morricone fan.

ok jaxon, let's simultaneously keep the gayness high and introduce some non-gayness. who rules jaxon?

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

I saw Cobra done by Zorn and the Zornites about a decade or so ago. It's the only time I've seen him live and he didn't play a note. The heavies were there though, Parkins, Ribot, etc.

not as overrated as sun ra!

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

i like ayler, pharaoh sanders, later coltrane & miles, coleman, don cherry--typical stuff for the noize board. the only contemporary stuff i really know & like is corasno/flaherty/greg kelley. and nmperign, who aren't really that much of a jazz band.

SO NOIZE (haitch), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard the rash of Arthur Doyle releases that came out in the wake of his revival (including the home cassette stuff), but an album like Arthur Doyle Quartet Live @ the Cooler is NOT fucking overrated. In fact, it's probably one of the best free jazz albums of all time.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

jewish jazz is weird i admit

howell huser (chaki), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Also, Charles Gayle is fucking great, but I don't know what albums to recommend.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

I like Ra's voice but I hate the cadence and tone of that woman in the movie.

June Tyson didn't join the band until around '68 so anything before that is safe.

If you're listening to Ra just for noise, you're better off just listening to noise.

?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

I don't even like noise.

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Where did Vince go? :(

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

"tim, i have that Out There a Minute Ra disc. on the back it says "This Compact Disc comprises Sun Ra's personal selection of rare Arkestra recordings from the late 60s made in and around 42nd st, new york city, planet Earth"."

Yeah I know, I was wondering what albums those tracks were from or if it was all unreleased stuff? That's some awesome stuff to have gone unreleased.

"Is that Out There a Minute Ra compilation a good first pick?"

I would think so.

"Larry Young is in Lifetime, right?"

Yeah, first album is just a trio of him, Williams, and McLaughlin. Second album adds Jack Bruce on bass.

What in the world is wrong with June Tyson?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

McLaughlin and Bruce also together on Jack's Things We Like lp from the same period...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

john zorn is NOT jazz, people.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

dabnis coleman's ghost (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

he knows his ornette, sure.

xpost - jazz-ish, maybe, yeah ok, sure. but it's a sad state of affairs if when the subject jazz comes up, zorn's name is one of the first bandied about.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

AUTHENTICITY POLICE!!! WOOO WOOO

NEW YEAR'S EVE
Hemophiliac: John Zorn, Mike Patton & Ikue Mori
John Zorn's Electric Masada
Electric Masada w/ Mike Patton
Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

it's not about authenticity, it's about what SUCKS and what doesn't.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

i think hes jazz. he's just 'new york downtown' jazz which is its own thing i guess.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Is Frank Zappa jazz?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

zappa is jazz rock

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

zappa just plain sucks, sorry.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Zorn fuckin rules. Classic Guide to Strategy is an all-time beast of solo instrumentalism. Masada and Naked City two of the best ensembles of the 90s. and dig his playing on those John Patton records! Stence is insane.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

zappa is good. a noize dood should listen to lumpy gravy. stense is insane.

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

whatever dude, there's about 50 jazz dudes i'd list as ruling way before zorn.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

theres 50 funk doods id list before james brown. doesnt mean the dood sucks.

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Masada is very much in the jazz tradition (heads, solos, instrumentation).

Keith C (lync0), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I liked when Laura was talking to Joel about how she liked LCD Soundsystem and Joel was like BUT X IS BETTER. Great show, old man!

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Well, there's about 300 jazz dudes that totally rule, so Zorn being around say 50 is fine by me. I'd probably rank him lower than 50th, I dunno. I'm not saying he's Duke Ellington. but he does rule. It's a polyarchy.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Hey, why don't you guys turn this into another crappy list thread. That'd be great!!!!! 50 or 300, you pick!! Please!!!

'you' vs. 'radio gnome invisible 3' FITE (ex machina), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 1 December 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I'll bet there's some Zorn stuff I'd like. I never listened to the two Naked City albums I had, though (the first one w/ the dead guy on the cover and the one with the short songs and Eye was on it), and thought they were a little corny.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 5 December 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

You can probably tell that I like the mysterioso stuff and the funky bass vamps. There's a part II if anyone is interested.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 5 December 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

awesome. i've never caught the Sun Ra bug. i've got a few albums (space is the place, lanquidity, out there a minute, concert for the comet..., and i think i have nuclear war on mp3s), but he never made me want to go out and pick up every one of his albums. i'm looking forward to listening to someone else's "greatest hits".

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 5 December 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

back to what ian and i were talking about upthread about roy ayers being "real jazz", here's a review of a Johnny Hammond Smith album. (not that you're necessarily a jazz purist)

Exposing a jazz purist to most recordings involving Fonce and Larry Mizell is much like shoving a vampire into daylight. Gambler's Life, the first of two Johnny "Hammond" Smith albums featuring the brothers' ambitious handiwork, isn't an exception. Watch a purist seek shelter in his dank cave whenever this album is within earshot. Smith switches to Fender Rhodes for most of the material, and the Mizells bring their ARPs (singe!), spirited if unpolished group vocal arrangements (crackle!), wah-wah guitars, and soaring instrumental arrangements made to shine on the dancefloor (sizzle!).

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 5 December 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

thanks walter, looking forward to this mix. I have Atlantis, Jazz in Silhouette & Heliocentric Worlds Vol.1, but none of them have ever really struck a chord with me. Maybe something on here will change that.

Keith C (lync0), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

i listened to that mix falling asleep last night and it was good. the end.
