I think Nike has less defensible labor practices than Coke.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

i got some new balances, they still haven't arrived yet.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

The whole Nike/New Order thing is creepy/awesome.

I bought a pair of Nikes four or five years ago before I started thinking seriously about issues like, ahem, abusive labor practices. But I have had them this long, and they're not showing signs of wearing out. I still wear them.

Coke kills workers in their Colombian plants, fyi. Being a trade unionist there is like an automatic death sentence.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

Coke can dissolve anything. Put a dead colombian worker in coke overnight and by morning he'll be completely obliterated.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

supposedly they use it to get barnacles off ships.

Clean Tile Grout: By accident, I found the perfect grout cleaner for my tile floors! I spilled a can of Coca Cola on my kitchen floor. When I wiped it up, to my surprise the grout was as white as can be!

This is a half-truth.

Coke also does evil things with the water supply in places like India though I don't feel like looking up details.

oh yeah like they totally suck the groundwater out of everywhere they can so basically all that's left to drink is nothing, and also it's bad when there's no groundwater, structurally, for the ground

Nike is dope. who gives a fuck about a few lobster-clawed mofos in ho chi minh city? as long as things don't cost triple or more because of increased production costs, they can work their little hearts out for my benefit lol.

"New Balance built an image as the anti-Nike (Gay, Jason Feb 1999). New Balance sold itself as Made In the USA, but in reality most of New Balance production comes from China and other parts of Asia. Only 1600 workers in five factories produce New Balance. And in these factories, the component parts are not 100% USA made. New Balance estimates it at 75% ... visit a Chinese subcontractor's factory that makes the same shoe for New Balance. You might think you had traveled back in time 100 years. In the factories that manufacture shoes for New Balance, Nike, Reebok International, and other U.S.-based athletic-footwear companies, hundreds of women hunch over sewing
machines much like ones used in their grandmothers' time. The story is the same across China and in Indonesia and Vietnam. Young women in their teens or early 20s, with little education and few skills, put in long hours six days a week, usually performing the same task in mind-numbing repetition for 20 cents to 40 cents an hour..." - business week 3721, p 92
