that was laswell wasnt it? i was in denial. actually he wasnt bad, some of the bass synth pedal whatever stuff hit me the right way at points. but everything from haino was hot, pure genius. GANGSTER

what's wrong with Laswell? he gets a bad rap. fuckin PAINKILLER, LAST EXIT, MATERIAL ... that's membership in three pretty kick-ass bands right there. damn tho I've still never heard Purple Trap. and yeah, jealous as hell.

he just releases too much mediocre stuff. no one doubts his classic traxx. TIME ZONE WORLD DESTRUCTION! he's in the zorn "RELEASE EVERYTHING I RECORD!" school of thought which can get tiresome.

he famously screwed up the production on mr bungle's first album but i like his organic take on recording for most tzadik sessions. the ruins albums on tzadik sound supirior to the albums on shimmy disc for instance.

i love Zorn too but actually though, now that I think about it, I remember when Allegorical Misunderstanding came out on Avant and I couldn't believe how emaciated he had made them sound. especially coming on the heels of the total sensory assault of the PSF Live stuff..

laswell's string of hip-hop on celluloid, Time Zone's Wildstyle, Phase II, B-Side, Fab Five Freddie, Herbie Hancock, and much of the Material stuff from then is awesome. But he's done so much ethno-dub-collaboration stuff that's just a flood...

yeah course laswell has been on some gd albs, produced some great recs etc. - law of averages! - BUT he was def. the weakest link when I saw Zorn/Frith/Lombardo/Laswell live abt 4/5 years ago, and to me his 12 string bass just sounds horrible on that Purple Trap Tzadik double set

I wish I could go to Fushitsusha tonight, but I doubt I will because of holiday party + still getting over a cold. I would bring earplugs. When I saw them at Tonic a few year ago, Haino was playing through these two enormous guitar amplifiers, and it was one of the loudest shows I've seen there.
