Flyngam Heights
by Cark Jangston

Settled by Dutch merchants in 1683, the vibrant Brooklyn neighborhood is now home to thriving Puerto Rican, Hatian and Brazillian communities as well as a slow trickle-in of (thankfully not too many) artsy hipster-types. From the colorful musical sounds pouring from the latin social clubs to the shouts of the capoeira-dancing children on the school blacktops, Flyngam remains one of the most diverse enclaves even in this diverse boro.

What's Worth Checking Out : Max Package is a great vintage/junk store (35th and Carter Ave.); Pant Artspace hosts monthly booty bass parties (Elm and Holden Sts.); Luft (255 Barteling St.) is a loftspace performance center that doubles as a yoga studio during the day. Kinead's (Grant and P Sts.) boasts the area's best mimosa brunch

look, I moved to Flyngam Heights 5 years ago, way before it was cool. When we'd get together for mimosa brunch, we had to bring out own champagne, it was THAT ghetto! But it was getting to white so I moved to the projects.

We're playing a show at Waste tonight. It's this old sewage treatment plant that they turned into a venue -- it's got this really crazy smell!

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 16 December 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

no joke, when the Cooler first opened it smelled like meat.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 16 December 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

They rocked the incense, Tonic stylee

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 16 December 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I actually wrote two Neighborhoods pieces a while back -- I just checked and am glad to say I never used the words "vibrant" "thriving" or "colorful." I also didn't mention any hipster crap. But there really wasn't any to mention.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 16 December 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

"Artspace" is a code word for "trojan horse"

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 16 December 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

where i come from, artspace is a code word for "drunk punx."

Ha, I can almost see them doing one on Marcy Projects.

"Max Package"

The Sanskrit word for the male sexual organ is (F)Lingam and is loosely translated as "Wand of Light." In Tantra or Sacred Sexuality, the (F)Lingam is respectfully viewed and honored, as a "Wand of Light" that channels creative energy and pleasure.

Orgasm is not the goal of the (F)Lingam (Heights) massage although it can be a pleasant and welcome side effect. The goal is to massage the Lingam, also including testicles, perineum and Sacred Spot (prostate) externally, allowing the man to surrender to a form of pleasure he may not be accustomed to. From this perspective both receiver and giver relax into the massage.

Men need to learn to relax and receive. Traditional sexual conditioning has the man in a doing and goal oriented mode. The (F)Lingam (Heights) Massage allows the man to experience his softer, more receptive side and experience pleasure from a non-traditional perspective.

New generation type-uh.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Mars bar is terrible.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Lauren is a liar, she loves the Mars Bar.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

that was never in dispute. i just thought that i shouldn't challenge jon's delusions, that's all.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i spent what? 3 years of my life there at a conservative estimate? i'm not going to disown it now. i went there last saturday, in fact.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

i can report a 50% reduction in odor, at least, but the crazy black midget quotient is holding steady.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Felix tried to give me a blow job once. When I refused, he pulled a knife on me. Good times.

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

there's this other guy now that they refer to as "bad zombie." last i heard, felix was in a nursing home but i'm not sure how that story ended (or if indeed it did end).

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Gary? The Brit-accented ex-punk guy?

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

he's still around. and he still get REALLY mad if you ask if he's australian.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

my fave gary moment occurred one night when i was behind the bar. he had been passed out for a while, then he woke up and loudly demanded another tequila. i filled his glass up to the meniscus, but it wasn't good enough. he berated me for about 5 minutes then fell back asleep.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

wait, you used to bartend there?

detoxyDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

if you were a girl and hung out there often enough, at some point you ended up behind the bar. it was very sporadic.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

i shouldn't generalize. if i'm a regular anywhere, at some point i'll end up behind the bar but that's actually not normal behavior.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

was Amy tending bar when you went?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

nope. she's only weds & thurs.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 December 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)
