granola addicts: what up

i am hooked on this kingslake & crane shit. it is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive, something like $10/lb.

but it is *easily* the best granola i have ever tasted in my life. i am not sure why it's so good. the ingredients: rolled oats, brown sugar, pecans + almonds, dried cherries / cranberries / raisins, coconut, vanilla, salt + cinnamon.

it is only slightly sweet, it is very hearty and crunchy, almost never gets soggy, you can eat tons of it w/o feeling gross, the whole thing has that sort of baked-goods vibe that makes you happy just eating it.

notice there are no oils in the ingredients. i think the way they do it is to cook the brown sugar into some sort of caramel and then use that to stick the oats together during toasting.

2nd runner-up is the granola at URTH CAFE in LA (on melrose, right?). very nutty, lots of sesame seeds, w/ a smoky taste redolent of asian foods. they claim it is homemade, which is suspicious since it tastes almost EXACTLY like the "homemade" granola at the BEACHGRASS CAFE in my hometown. anybody know what this granola is?

3rd runner-up is whole foods' healthy hempseed granola. it's very good, only 140 calories / serving w/ lots of fiber. the only problem is it doesn't last long on the shelf - after a month the hempseeds sprout and the thing starts to taste nasty, like pot brownies w/o any of the, uh, bonus effects.

i also occasionally enjoy whole foods' blueberry granola, maple pecan granola, and vanilla macaroon granola. those are all pretty good. except they are way too sweet, after a while i start to feel like a kid eating fruit loops or something, it's just hippie junkfood.

get the fuck off my table: new england "supernatural" granola (what is this bullshit?), any of those "premium" granolas that aren't chunky or nutty at all and have like 280 cals/serving, bear naked granola (oily crap) etc etc

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

ok also maybe this is a good place to talk about soymilks?

i really like vitasoy complete w/ fiber. it's pretty much unsweetened so you can use it in your scrambled eggs and omelettes w/o them developing nasty sugary flavors.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

"silk" is oversweetened garbage, westsoy makes me shudder w/ fear (these are the people that use giant mutant GMO beans, right?), pacific is totally nasty beany-flavored soymilk.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

i get blueberry flax granola in bulk. it's like $2.19 a pound. you seem to be paying too much for granola. it's heavenly though! ;-) esp. with organic whole milk yogurt (the kind with the delicious layer of fat on top)

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

also silk is pretty disgusting, but not that bad with crappy cereal or something. VERY bad in pudding, like i tried to make goya rice majarete with it and it was so gross. also bad for making oatmeal.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

vahid do you like not dogs?

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i think that's the same blueberry granola i get at whole foods. i think between the 25 or 30 types of granola they carry, there are only two or three manufacturers: golden temple, nature's path and 365 foods (their own brand)

this is what kills me about this kingslake shit: it costs 4 times as much as anything else on the market. but it is SO FUCKING GOOD.

i am typing this at the cafe w/ two 1 lb bags in front of me: they were out of the granola in the kitchen, so i bought two "gift packs" and asked for a bowl of soymilk. i just finished half of one and i am trying my hardest not to eat the rest of it.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

dogs? what dogs? you mean tofu dogs?

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

i am cool w/ my tofu in classic "brick" format.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

i will keep an eye out for these "not dogs".

lately i have been getting my soy protein in the form of blueberry / soy powder / soymilk shakes. SIPPIN THAT PURP.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

they are not just tofu, but not dogs. do you guys get soy boy brand out there? it's from rochester. they make the not dogs and they're delicious and i've eaten like 6 this week. (i did not want to go shopping and i am poor). also i know where the secret dumpster cache of not dogs is, but i can't tell you.

ARRRRGH GET THAT GREASY SHIT OUT OF MY SIGHT

okay i only tried to orange flavor but it was FOUL

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

you called bear naked oily crap, but it is 140 calories a serving, vahid.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

plus i like all the extreme cycling on their web site. it goes with my lifestyle.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

i tried the fruit + nut and i SWEAR i could taste straight up mazola-tasting canola oil w/ each bite. maybe i should have tried peak protein or this apple stuff you're pushing.

i realize the numbers are right (this kingslake stuff has 11g of fat to bear naked's 5 or 6g) but it was more about the taste and texture.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

like i am pretty sure the kingslake granola's high fat content is because it has so many almonds + pecans in it.

the gf is hooked on this garbage

but i think they are using nutrasweet instead of sugar because it tastes minty and nasty.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

i like the pitcher tho. it's very cheerful.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

also, have you considered rice milk? less farts.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

and we all need less of those.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

rice milk is too sweet and watery for my style. tho i hear you on the gassss.

when i'm feeling lush i buy ALMOND MILK.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

i know it's not necessarily granola, but i'm digging the Trader Joe's Matterhorn Trail Mix. it's peanuts, dried cranberries, white chocolate (or yogurt?) chips and dried pineapples. it tastes like fucking peanut butter and jelly sammiches. yum

jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 17 December 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

oh shit, after all that i had some slightly overripe soymilk w/ my granola for dinner tonight ... strange white chunks at the bottom of the carton ...

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

jaymc - that is the same brand as they sell bulk at wholefoods! the "hemp" flavor is like the same thing, except unflavored, and with hemp seeds. the blueberry variety = replace the pumpkin w/ blueberry.

seriously, though - this kingslake and crane granola is on some WHOLE NOTHER SHIT.

NEXT LEVEL GRANOLA.
