Naohiro Ukawa's "GIMNOPEDIE1/SATIE" is composed of two parts: Part 1 is the scratching key note coupled with a scene showing a man screaming while his cheeks are being weirdly tugged from both sides, and whose face is completely distorted as if it were made of rubber. Part 2 is a blackout only with a title that appears in white onscreen. The sound continues. It made us focus on the sounds until we gradually noticed that the key note of the screaming voice is sampled to play Satie's Gimnopedie 1

in contrast

Momus focused on only one scene: people sipping noodles. "I don't appreciate violence. I wanted to make a boringly peaceful piece out of this violent film. This film scene was very impressive, with its beautiful sound and color, and composition. I extracted the beauty and made this piece." It is titled "Healing."

i think momus cheated. that's not a "remix", that's an "edit".

Infinite Delorean Freaks, Ukawa Naohiro, GLAY Museum;
art project mirror, 5 monitors, mirror ball, 5 DVDs, 1 DeLorean (halved)
2003
(c) Glay Museum, Nitro Enterprises, Mom'n'dad productions

Permanent installation for a museum dedicated to the Japanese pop group Glay in Hakodate, showing a DeLorean Ukawa cut into two perfect halves.
(The following is an excerpt from the exhibition description)
The act of "riding a car" is used variously in song lyrics and literature as a metaphor for sex!!! Ride! Being ridden! Riding around! Riding over! Come! Go! Die! Dying!!! Man's instinct wanders about in quest of speed and pleasure while nestling up with death!!! The guitar is another such metaphor!!! Steel strings stretched on a thick, long, hard neck vibrate air which fondles the eardrum and arouses!!
Glay guitarist Hisashi purchased his beloved DeLorean, to see it split it in two! This super car without a passenger seat is essence of the lofty and lonely Hisashi itself!!! This DeLorean, with its mirror-covered interior space, regains symmetry through the refraction of light and darkness! And infinite amplification!! This installation is Hisashi's sound amplified loud by the electronic circuit of the guitar amplifier itself. And the audience that "rides" it will plunge in ecstasy and pleasure, into Nirvana, and conceive new "life" on its honeymoon with Hisashi!!! Now, that's "life"!!!!

anyway i just bought a book on naohiro and i really like it.

sort of surprised i can't find more of his work on the internet.

also i am really surprised to find out he is japan's most in-demand event VJ. or something like that.

also i am really surprised he insists on calling himself a "media rapist" instead of a graphic designer + video artist.

also i am really surprised you went ten posts deep in that conversation with yourself
