there a thread on this yet?

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

saw x-press 2 playing the other week at the cross, dropping border community type stuff (i like soopertrack sure, but don't see how its any different from progtrance business), it doesn't surprise that digweeds done a set for fabric

weird thing about fabric is, while, out there, as a 'brand', 'product', fabric is a gentrifier, lifestyle accessory, 96 revisited, ministry of sound blueprint return, in the actual club itself, fabric is resolutely proletarian, ungentrified, mechanics from hertfordshire make up the base

calderdale in the 70s (gareth), Saturday, 17 December 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

weird thing is JESS GETS IT TOTALLY WRONG

he only talks about the boring tracks on the album (the first four, michael mayer) ... all the exciting stuff happens when slam / angel alanis / infusion / josh wink etc are involved ... those songs all have hummable hooks and stuff.

and yet he claims those are the songs "he can't remember" ... the nerve!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

i bought some more fabric mixes tonight. i even bought the MEAT KATIE volume - not as terrible as you'd think! not terrible at all!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 December 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

im not sure what "gentrification of dance music" is supposed to mean - hipsters clearing the dancefloor with ironic "raving"? or is this about home listening?

Yawn (Wintermute), Saturday, 17 December 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

home listening really, i guess

but it could apply in terms of social context as well. clubs that are shady, rough parts of town, local working class crowd etc, to those that are seen as safe (and prob whiter while we're at it). 'none of them badboys innit'.

terry lennox. (gareth), Saturday, 17 December 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 December 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

a grumpy 50-something gay man told me last night that "i got very excited when i heard about this genre called 'deep' house, but then i heard it...it just wasn't gut-bucket enough for me."

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 December 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

i believe a hi-nrg remix of "like a prayer" was playing in the background at the time. (there was later a hi-nrg remix of "my humps." welcome to america.)

u saved me (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

he also told me his favorite "band" was "those chemical guys," by which i found out he meant the chem bros, so take that for what it's worth.

no hi-NRG remix of "my humps," no credibility. fuck the wire.

"solid" and boring is exactly the description for the Digweed mix. don't think I've heard anyone mention it once since it came out!

yeah, he's an international tastemaker for smooth "jazzy" hip hop, techno and soul. he's pretty on point with lots of stuff, but usually is a fan of stuff that's waaaay too jazzy.

bo janglin (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

what do you think of dubstep? is there something i'm missing? it doesn't sound like dance music, it sounds like trip hop. where is the "feminine pressure"-type thinkpiece on dubstep that will make it all crystal-clear to me?

also you should give horsepower's "to the rescue" another shot. it's actually a really great disc! obv nowhere near as good as the 1st one, but it stands on its own merits, i think.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 10 November 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

i think it probably says something that i've enjoyed the various production email more than any other dubstep related disc. the best parts of the burial record just sounded like listening to horsepower on the radio with the dial stuck between stations.

"to the rescue" is in my closet somewhere. maybe i'll pull it out this weekend.

bo janglin (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

HUNTA-V (vahid), Friday, 10 November 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

well i was going to say it's for ex-dnb heads who were pissed at girls going back to dnb clubs over the last couple of years but perhaps that bizarre "skanking" photo on the other thread proves me wrong.
