JESUS CHRIST I AM OLD

Dan (Hello, Children!) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 22:12 (twenty years ago)

I had to watch the first few episodes of Roots in 8th grade social studies as part of black history month

this import is worth the price:

titty sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 01:58 (twenty years ago)

tehresa, that episode was awesome, especially when they showed you how they made the transporter special f/x (glitter swirling in water!) and showed how they put on Worf's make-up who then exited the trailer saying loudly "Stand aside -- I take large steps." CLASSIC.

according to wikipedia, that episode was also the only authorized broadcast of ST:TNG bloopers!

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 02:18 (twenty years ago)

I remember watching the original broadcast of "Roots" on TV.

Dan (33 In 8 Days) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 02:29 (twenty years ago)

i remember being utterly shocked at how small the set really was... how can an intergalactic startship be the size of a closet!?!?

kingfish pibb Xtra (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 07:01 (twenty years ago)

I remember watching the original broadcast of "Roots" on TV.

Me too. Kunta getting whipped and that guy getting boiled alive in "Shogun" are my first two television mini-series memories.

(33 in 296 days.)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

shes got a stupid mouth.

my mother used to have us watch roots every year

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I think Richard Chamberlin wandering around with a bandage over his eyes was the only thing i remember from the Shogun broadcast. 3.5 years 'til i'm 33.

I'm not old enough to have watched Roots when it was originally broadcast (wasn't even a glimmer), but I'm old enough that most of my Reading Rainbow-watching was before Burton was on Star Trek: The Next Generation. I particularly remember an episode about Chinese New Year.

Memorable Quotes from
"Reading Rainbow" (1983)

[Closing phrase]
LeVar Burton: I'll see you next time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LeVar Burton: Of course, you don't have to take my word for it.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

cue: horizontal wipe to young kid sitting in front of large projection of the book they are reviewing

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

i wanted to be transformed into a cartoon astronaut like the girl in the Reading Rainbow opening sequence.

latebloomer: Let's just say I do for bullshit what Stonehenge did for Rocks (lat, Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

(xp) Doesn't he then say "Read the book!"?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

new agers who believe in that terrence mckenna 2012 singularity bullshit are just as dumb as fundie xtians with their left behind rapture bullshit

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 22:04 (twenty years ago)

I thought that 2012 was the end-of-the-Aztec-Calendar thing

kingfish russian bigamist (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 22:17 (twenty years ago)

it was the mayan calendar, but yeah. terrence mckenna did some numerological bullshit with the i ching and arrived at the same date (12/12/2012). which just proves that numerology is bunk.

but if the mayans had not been destroyed, i think they would have extrapolated their calendar a little longer, ne?

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 22:35 (twenty years ago)
