Spurred on by comparisons to Animal Collective, I've decided to give this guy a try. Which album should I start with?

Who I hear in Animal Collective:

Olivia Tremor Control, Tower Recordings, early (instrumental) Sebadoh, Home, Kawabata/Youngs.

my favorite is Medallion Animal Carpet. the most scrambled & fungal. beautifully fucked up record can not believe how good it is (though I didn't get it the first time).

the most songlike one is Skull Mailbox. Little Black Train is 70's classic rock played by thousands of spiders.

His "Griffin" (from 13 Songs & a Thing) to me sounds a lot like a Sung Tongs song. But yes, Bob Drake is great. Maybe my favorite "songwriter" at the moment.

it's true, it's true. i think i had to hear those songs live to fully appreciate them. i have a hard time getting into campfire's production, but as an album, it is undeniable. sung tongs has better songs, imo, but it's not that great as an album.

I just got Shunned Country from BD in the mail yesterday. Short songs = very fractured experience. It kind of reminds of Naked City in that regard, although the music is obv not like NC. Anyway, great, and it will take a while before I'm able to figure out most of what's going on.

that's "They Live in the Well" - it's the first song from The Skull Mailbox. I think if you aren't really familiar with him, start there.

In The Well is probably his best song IMO. I didn't really like 13 Songs and a Thing but I haven't heard it in a while.
