in the hintersville regions of the south, gay bars are much more fun to go dancing at. there was one club that had a good non-meat market old wave night that all the hardcore kids went to. but other than that, the gay bar was one of the only other clubs worth going to.

that was my exp tho. we took what we could get for good dance music. (assuming you didn't want to dance to raver stuff, which was always a mixed bag in my opinion.)

when we were on tour in europe we always went to the gay bars on principle. open later, more tolerant of yanks, better music, etc.

JUST A BRO ASKIN' ANOTHER BRO OUT.

o -- (eman), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

But it's in honour of the greatest porno magazine ever!

Seriously, "Straight to Hell" is an amazing institution. Go and seek out the book-length anthologies (entitled MEAT, SEX, and CUM) and read for yourself. Boyd McDonald (the old editor who passed away in the late 90s) was a genius. It's all first person anecdotes of sexual experiences sent in by readers over the years, and it's a totally great rondelay of Vietnam war era military hookups, hillbilly incest stories, bizarre truckstop encounters, odd rants about straight people, etc.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

you know, i heard this woman on WBAI last night talking about the anti-trans issues in secondwave lesbian feminism...and there as this woman who was explaining how she could no longer feel comfortable with a former freind and activist who had gone from being a lesbian femminist to now identifying as a gay man. she was asking what role mysoginy played in her friends conversion etc. and all i caould think was, wow, for someone evidently pretty concerned with gender issues, she sounds pretty damned uptight about what gender connotates...

granted, the friend might have changed a lot and become someone the woman was threatened by, but it just sounded like complete horsepoop to me. hes still that person, why should a change in his gender and orientation matter so very much. it just sounded of pure hypocracy.

random thought... ill go back to typing names in a line now

Oh, past video selections at the Gag! night have included Ladies & Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, Breaking Glass and Rip Taylor in Chuck Barris' seminal "The $1.98 Beauty Show."

DOES A NOISE BRA MOVE TO WILLIAMSBERG??

ANS: YES, I THINK SO!

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

I am actually super sad about leaving my mid-Brooklyn homies and the library and the park and Chavella's and everything but circumstances compel. Maybe I'll be back next year when I am rich!

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

!!

sleep, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

I know! Assuming the details get wrung out, I'm moving in w/ our cheeky young friend, to his old room, actually.

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

ohh cool! i still haven't been over there.

sleep, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

laurel is a sellout

sanskrit, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

I see more ppl from Wburg than ProspHiters, anyway!

Dr Morbius, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

i guess we got bell_labs in trade, and laurel ended up as the player to be named later.

sanskrit, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still bikeable, guys. Sanskirt, I never see you anyway, you goon.

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

WHERE'S THE LOVE?

sanskrit, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

In Park Slope, apparently, since you never leave it.

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

i declined contributing to that impersonate yourself thread but i considered putting "the gabbneb of BK, with slightly better taste"

sanskrit, Monday, 12 November 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

who is "our cheeky young friend"??

ian, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

laurel HOW COULD YOU?!

i mean, congratulations. chavella's is nice but there are good tacos up there too.

bell_labs, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

Tacos made by white people "less skanky," say Williamsburg indierockers

dmr, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

so did your "landlord" flee to Europe? congrats on finding new place

dmr, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

everybody posting here has to go to Metropolitan w/ me next time.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't want to, lindray, but roommate is kicking me out for his preggers gf, and I'm in a time and $$ pinch. Better the devil you know, I figured....

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

you should move into a wimmin's shelter, just to make G----- feel bad.

ian, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

God?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

everytime laurel moves into a women's shelter, it makes the baby jesus cry.

ian, Monday, 12 November 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

It'd make Laurel cry, too.

Laurel, Monday, 12 November 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

five years pass...

so there's this venue / dance club called Europa in Greenpoint

does anyone go there to see bands? ever?

Milton Parker, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

i have

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Friday, 1 February 2013 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

I saw something there once w/ hstencil (rip) -- maybe some Matador band? -- and there was a big Polish dance crowd waiting to get in after.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Friday, 1 February 2013 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

sound system / vibe okay? I am just lost when it comes to mid-size Williamsburg/Greenpoint venues these days. it does seem this place's focus is mainly as a eurodance palace.

Milton Parker, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

they have metal and punk shows there all the time bruh

Show's I've seen at the Europz: Non, Fear, Eyehategd, Trash Talk, Future of the Left,

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 1 February 2013 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

the sound is fine I think, the vibe is completely ridiculous (it's done up like a fake castle, eurodance palace is correct) but with the right band it's not a big deal. the bands draw their own crowd separate from the dance thing.

first time I met Pete was at a Blues Control and Clockcleaner show there

dmr, Friday, 1 February 2013 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

gay bar name ideas

the cockcleaner

suze (Matt P), Friday, 1 February 2013 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

I saw the Lucksmiths there and one or two other shows. Was fine iirc.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Friday, 1 February 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

Things tend to end early though and they clear it out after so they can turn it into a paying disco.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Friday, 1 February 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

oh yeah otm. I think the clockcleaner show was like 6-10pm with three bands.

dmr, Friday, 1 February 2013 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

thanks guys! I'd just never heard of it, and the website made it look 99% dance palace 1% venue. I am admittedly still a little lost when it comes to Williamsburg shows (now, optimistically, shows in the 'Williamsburg / Greenpoint epicenter')
