ya'll got a lot of $0.50 and $1 tolls. ridiculous. i'd rather pay one big toll than a half-dozen tiny ones every ten minutes.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

That's not a nice thing to say, jaxon.

the girls on graham avenue are quite a handful.

Now, to get them to keep walking to Nassau Ave. That's the rub I am after.

i remember right after they went down car services and even people walking kept getting lost, as they were the only navigational landmarks around.

gritty sanskrit (sanskrit), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Today at the grocery store off Graham a stockboy stopped me and asked me in heavily accented English (multiple times, I might add, as I was wearing headphones) "WHAT IS LIFE?" I realized after a few weird seconds that I had a box of Life Cereal in my basket. I don't know if that made it less irritating or more.

LAURA TO THREAD! MORMONS IN JAPAN!!!

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 4 May 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

You can spot them really easily because they are the only people in Japan that wear bike helmets, and they wear HUGE ones. They used to hang out by train stations and convince gullible high school students to go to their "English classes."

Mormons = LDS. They are all over here, so it is puzzling to me why they still send missionaries here. Saw a lot of them in China too.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Friday, 5 May 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

as i understand it (my best friend is a mormon), it's sort of like a service project. it's like being a monk for two years. so you don't necessarily spend all of your time proselytizing - my buddy spent a lot of the time doing things like helping elderly or down-on-their-luck mormons, attending study groups w/ other missionaries, and so on.

actually, i don't think it's such a bad idea and in a way it sort of matches the military service model of a lot of social democracies. you join the "army", and you go live for 1 or 2 years w/ other young men your age and learn how to live on your own and spend your time doing service projects and stuff. w/o the religious baggage i think it'd be a good idea for everyone.

DEEDS NOT WORDS (vahid), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

i've known many very nice mormons, and the idea of going away for "service" for two years is very nice, but it doesn't make me feel any better about the people harassing me in the grocery store parking lot.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

all LDS are mormons, but not all mormons are LDS.

the LDS is the "mainstream" group in salt lake city with the big church and all that, but there are lots of fringe lunatic mormons in tiny orthodox sects all over the country. these are the guys that do shit like have six wives and hoard weapons and things.

DEEDS NOT WORDS (vahid), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

They are generally very nice people, yes, but also very creepy.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:21 (nineteen years ago)

ullgh these two mormons used to come by the vintage shop i worked in in ithaca on a regular basis..they would pretend to look at clothes and talk about jesus...this did not ride well with a stoned and hungover me...my bornagin, yet crack addled former boxer of a boss was enough to dealth with...

Hip-hop Nation

By Suzy Hansen, Salon. Posted July 19, 2002.
Some young black activists complain that the media marginalizes the good things about hip-hop, choosing to focus on the often misogynistic lyrics, flashy and violent music videos and gangsta image of its stars rather than its more socially conscious messages.

Dear Plagiarists: You Get What You Pay For
By SUZY HANSEN

Published: August 22, 2004

COLLEGE, as we all know, costs a frightening amount of money -- the tuition, the new wardrobe, the shower flip-flops. Even cheating, that historically thrifty task of rifling an upperclassman's desk drawers, runs college kids a steep tab. These days, stressed-out perfectionists and lazy no-goods alike can Google their way to an astounding array of plagiarism Web sites. Many companies sell term papers, essays and book reports by the thousands, for as much as $250 a pop, all just a click and Mom's credit card away, and all in the privacy of an undergraduate's dorm room.
