i am just not smart enough to install LaTexIT. or, rather, i can get it going but i am waaaay too dumb to install pdftex and ghostscript on my own without help.

use emacs. or better yet, vi! LaTeX is for the weak!

ghostscript totally has great step-by-steps for OSX online! If I can do it once you can do it.

Install TeX and LaTeX (and the rest of that sort of shit: ghostscript, ImageMagick, etc.) using i-Installer. Get TeXShop if you want an editor. YAY.

If all you want to do is write equations in LaTeX and post them into other apps, then a full TeX/LaTeX install is probably overkill.

In fact, Geeta's advice might be the best -- if your app can incorporate LaTeX code then write what you need in vi or emacs and just paste it into your main file (I have only done this with xfig but I'm sure there are other apps that can execute LaTeX commands).

i'm having trouble figuring out what's best here.

all i want to do is neatly typeset equations. it would be a plus to be able to do worksheets in a style that will acclimate my kids to college materials.

OK, I haven't used LaTeXiT, but it looks like that's what you want. Follow Tombot's advice. Even I managed to install ghostscript on my PC laptop via cygwin, so you can do it too.

You could also track down a copy of Scientific Workplace AKA the program for science/math types who can't be bothered with LaTeX.

scientific workplace might be what i need. i'm sure markup text would be awesome but i don't think i have the time to learn it!
