spock's beard = super-lame pastiche of "classic" progressive stylings, w/a mighty slathering of xtian twee-ness. ++ super-tacky sub-beatles/elton john style "classic" songwriting. They are unbearable. They set back the cause of progressive music.
dream theater = academic/athletic exercise in how fast/densely/technicallt a group of musicians can play, and how long they can keep it up for. They can on occasions be entertaining in an OMGWTF way, but one number at a time is as much as anyone who isn't a G.I.T. style shredder could stand.
