Matmos is M. C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel. In their recordings and live performances over the last nine years, Matmos has gained an international reputation for combining cinematic ambience, abrasive techno, polyrhythmic programming, and textures sampled from a wide range of musical influences and nonmusical sound sources. Some of their wildest sounds have included amplied craysh nerve tissue, contact microphones on human hair, eld recordings of conversations in hot tubs, frequency response tests for defective hearing aids, and the sound of a frozen stream thawing in the sun. Their composition L.A.S.I.K., based on the sounds of laser eye surgery, was featured in the Whitney Museum of American Art's 2001 digital art exhibition BitStreams. Matmos recently completed a tour with Bjork, and their latest project, The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast, is scheduled for release by Matador in April 2006.

Can we barter what we wish?

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Friday, 14 April 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

cheaper than pitchfork festival.

drew, are you guys gonna be in nyc the next day (ie derby day)?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 April 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, our friend Monica's having a birthday party at her place that night so we gotta go to that (she's the one whose laser eye surgery we recorded). Do you do a Derby "do" chez vous?

And also, what is the best bar to tell everybody to meet at after the Whitney gig on Friday night? i.e. large enough to handle an influx of 50 random people, decent music, not annoying . . . NYCers, hold forth . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 14 April 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

i usually do a derby thing but i don't think i will this year, because my new place is too small. i might reconsider, though, but maybe not. i think k3v!n c0ult@s's lovely wife amy will be doing something even tho i think he'll still be in europe or something.

i dunno about any bars near the whitney. probably best bet is something downtown somewhere? hi-fi, maybe?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 14 April 2006 20:04 (twenty years ago)

FREE PAY WUT U WISH

i am reminded of a friend i brought to MoMA pay what you wish night, he plunked down two pennies and demanded a printed receipt.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Friday, 14 April 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

dammit i'm not gonna be here that night! i'll be in massachusetts setting a cow on fire (seriously!)

geeta (geeta), Friday, 14 April 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Are you setting live cows on fire like Tarkovsky did during the Tartar siege scene in Andrei Rublev?

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 14 April 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I just got Andrei Rublev from netflix and the shit had a HUGE crack in it

EGYPTIAN GENIE (blastocyst), Friday, 14 April 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

I've had Andrei Rublev for like a month now because I haven't been able to find time to watch it without distractions. I should have brought it to parents' so girlfriend and I could watch it.

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Saturday, 15 April 2006 03:04 (twenty years ago)

God, I turn to jelly every time I watch that farewell scene in the monastery when Andrei and Kiril say goodbye to each other. It just turns on the waterworks and I cry like a baby. Definitely one to see on the big screen if at all possible.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Saturday, 15 April 2006 08:59 (twenty years ago)

Now I reallu I wish I had brought since my SO is a huge crybaby in movies. I mean, she totally bawled at the end of Abyss!!!!!

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Saturday, 15 April 2006 15:15 (twenty years ago)

HOT ACTION ON TEH POSTER, DREW!!!!!! GOOD STUFF!!!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 14:06 (twenty years ago)

btw i hope you guys get some time to check out the biennial, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

I was curious as you said you might be moving, is all.

We really won't have much time at all on this visit alas, it's a quickie guerilla maneuver situation.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

i am really annoyed that i can't make the show due to work.
maybe i will try to wrangle it so i can go.

kinda sad your backing projections were better than most of the video installations in the Biennial itself. you eligible for the bucksbaum?

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Saturday, 6 May 2006 00:35 (twenty years ago)

GOOD STUFF. THAT BIRD CAGE JAM WAS OFF THE METER.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 8 May 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

sorry i didn't make julius', i was feelin' way tired and just went home. great fookin' show, dudes.

also meeting john d@rn!elle was a treat!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 8 May 2006 14:14 (twenty years ago)

bb (bbrz), Monday, 8 May 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

WHAT WAS WITH THE CREEPY DOOD, WITH THE PUFFY PANTS, NINJA SHOES AND AN EYE PATCH.

TOTALLY CREEPING ME OUT BRAH.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

i got there at 5:30 as it was my only chance to check out the show. ninja puff seemed to be following me around the 4th floor gallery with his bullhorn. i felt bad not saying hi, but i didn't want to interrupt his schtick with "hi i barely know you from teh internets".

the art sucked so bad that he was one of the better inclusions(!)

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

MIGUEL.....ONE DAY, OUR NIGHTS WILL CROSS.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Thanx for coming to the show everybody!

Julius' was fun and weird.

I caught some of the Whitney Houston Bisexual the next day. I liked Rodney Graham's spinning chandelier movie a lot. Ryan Trecurtin's video was awesome also. Some stuff was jacked up but it's sorta inevitable given the nature o' the beast . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Yeah -- check this out btw: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-9216191561964374045&q=ryan+trecartin

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 June 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

gotta find this out

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

I think that we are on at 4 pm at the Wintergarden- it's us and So Percussion together, doing our thing. Sounds like the Anthony Braxton piece for 100 tubas is going to be hella crucial.

New Yorkers . . . I am unclear on where this is happening. Is it near Century 21? I guess I better figure that shit out so we don't miss our own set.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

RAD

Courtney Gidts (ex machina), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

bb (bbrz), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

it is sort of near Century 21 but on the other side of the big depressing hole in the ground

http://www.worldfinancialcenter.com/maps/exterior.html

Renard (Renard), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

yeah dude it's fairly near century 21, on the other side of that big pit that people give a shit about, or whatever. between the two ugly buildings with green tops, one a circle, the other a pyramid. fuck a goldman sachs, tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

cool! I hope I get back from being hungover in rainy Asbury Park in time for tuba extravaganza at 1, but mebbe not. :(

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 June 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

Definitely coming with the girl Drew; has she shouted at you?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 1 June 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

Got there for the last 10 mins of Braxton's tubas. Enjoyed the gamelan and Matmos/So, after which I decided to leave on a high note as I was almost asleep on my feet after arduous, wet Jersey Shore recreating.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 5 June 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Yat Kha was nice afterward. The Bang on a Can All Stars stuff was well performed but poorly written, I thought.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 5 June 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

i missed it. :( sorry drew :(

"Solo Buttons For Joe Meek" is my favorite thus far. It reminds me of Nobukazu Takemura -- there's this one song that has this really ecstatic sounding guitar + synth tone cut up thing.... can't find it :*(

lord pooperton (ex machina), Monday, 12 June 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
My primary motivation for going to Chicago this weekend is the promise of a drunken hotel-sex marathon with a long-lost fuckbuddy. Getting to see Matmos at the Pitchfork Festival, though, ranks a close second.

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

I would go see them open for Antony at Warsaw tnite if I wasn't in a house-packing frenzy. :(

It was fun, Antony played, and then we played and we did two songs with Antony too. It was Antony-y all nite long. There was a trad Polish folk dancing group wandering around in costume at the bar too, and they got rowdy by the end of the night.

Drew made my heart go fluttery when he recognized me!

I was a little starstruck & shy, but it was very nice meeting you, Drew! even if it was only a couple minutes.

Did you end up hitting gay bars? I went to Sidetrack for a few minutes on Saturday nite and was at Spin for a while last night. As for breakfast, you should have joined Mike & I at Horseshoe Bar on Sunday for the Bluegrass Brunch. It was choice -- brisket & banjos & mix-yr-own bloody marys.
