American Works for Balinese Gamelan:

Kekembangan(1990) by Evan Ziporyn and Nyoman Windha

Kekembangan is an adaptation of Nyoman Windha's piece Kembang Pencak (for gamelan, male dancers, and singers), with a saxophone quartet substituted for singers. Ziporyn wanted Kekembangan to be a true "coming together" of musics. Sometimes the saxophones use alternate fingerings to approach the gamelan's intonation; sometimes they establish tonal contexts to frame the gamelan's melodies, prompting the Western listener to interpret the Balinese phrases in a shifting framework of Western modes.

I recognize the melody of this piece from a more traditional Balinese piece... can anyone id it? I imagine it is on some Nonesuch comp. I can Y$I if anyone wants it.

dunno, jon...it sounds like it could easily be related to a theme on the nonesuch music for the balinese shadow play or even more likely the music for the lovegoddess record...

steve shasta, i think it depends on your mood. javanese has a more mysterious sound, but i have experience playing balinese so i'm partial to that!

i don't know. i have not listened to the first track of american works.
the kecak is (one of) the (main) reason(s) that golden rain is such an enjoyable collection.
