is grumpy at the very tippy top of greenpoint? even north or vortex?

that place is like the coffee shop on the edge of the world.

ten months pass...
I'm on a very slow-paced quest to find great coffee in the NYC area.

I tried Grumpy for the first time the other day - the Chelsea location on 23rd st. I had a single shot and also sampled my wife's cappuccino. In spite of relatively good barista skills on display, I found the coffee to be a bit more on the sour side than I like (though far better than most espresso you get in NYC). The cappuccino had the same sour taste. Still, well-prepared coffees and I liked the fact that the foam was swirled with the coffee instead of just dumped on top in a big white heap. Not perfect, but one of the best things in town for sure.

I also went to Zibetto a few times recently on 6th Ave. (and 56th, I think). Neat little stand-up only counter about the size of a hallway, run by an Italian guy who knows his stuff. They use Danesi beans, which are good, but probably not as fresh as a local roast would be. Great presentation, and the espresso was very smooth but a bit on the mild and weak side. Still, also one of the best coffees I've had in town.
