You're beautiful, no matter what they say. Truth can't bring you down.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:02 (nineteen years ago)

i thought this thread was going to consist of the collecting and filing of important musical statements made on ilm

gear (gear), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

We could do that

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

I THINK WE ALREADY DID. OH SNAP.

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

Zappa's more about sensibility than sound, though. No Zappa = no Residents.

EMP 2006 Pop Conference: 4/27-30

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

oh man, rock gets the academic treatment - why do that? half the humanities departments want to be rock critics anyways and everybody has a blog, isn't there enough criticism already?

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

TOO MUCH, IF ANYTHING.
SHUT YOUR MOUTHS, CRITICS.

SILENCE! Don't you know that there are ROCK CRITCS and BLOGGERS in your presence?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really understand the point of showing up in person to watch somebody read a paper that you could just as easily read online or in a journal/newspaper/magazine, but I guess peeps are supposed to network and shoot the shit about music while getting drunk together as well.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

aren't all conferences like that? why is emp any different

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Scientific conferences aren't like that. Nobody plans their talk word for word, if a person starts reading from their slides then I feel like walking out. It's almost always easier to understand somebody's work by hearing them talk than by reading their paper because it's much easier to elaborate in a talk (language isn't as formal, you can fit a lot more data+diagrams into a talk than in a paper).

Then again, I've never really understood the point of book readings either.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, networking and drinking and seeing the "bigger picture" "come together" and def showing off is kinda the point of conferences.
xpost - i agree

all conferences are circle jerks. encouraging specific fetishes.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

they def show up for the ego boosts... i once played at this gamelan conference and our prof was all proud of herself for being the newly named chair of ethnomusicology and showed up expecting mad props, but she was quickly brought down to earth when all people said about her was "oh, she's [insert quasi famous 20th c composer]'s wife!"

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

its important that these papers are presented in public, otherwise Jessica Hopper wouldn't be able to interrupt and make an ass of herself.
