I made no-boil iced tea over the wkend, and spearmint-infused simple syrup to sweeten it! Then I proceeded to drink about six glasses and be hopped up on caffeine by nightfall, which resulted in me staying out until almost 6am. Good times.

humidity = 89%

caek, Monday, 22 August 2011 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

First of all what's Niederschlagswahrscheinlichkeit? Chance of rain? Great word.

That sucks tho, Caek. The last time I visited my family in the Pfaltz was 2003 (too long!) and there was a massive heatwave, the kind where records break and people die. Nothing was air conditioned and it was awful. I thought I was going to die and I literally spent the night on the tiled bathroom floor because it was the only way I could get cool enough to sleep. Hopefully they have better air conditioning or at least some heavy-duty fans in Munich.

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Monday, 22 August 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, it's literally "Precipitation Probability"

2003 was all time (literally) for europe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_European_heat_wave. i was living in london that summer. the commute was intense, but i had a/c at work and a friend who was house sitting for americans so had access to fridge bigger than car and a/c at home.

my new apartment is great. it's and old building with high ceilings so it's 70F there all day long. i beat heat there. unfortunately i am staying over at the old one to tidy up/do laundry. hence i will die tonight. so sad.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Monday, 22 August 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

I was in London that summer too, Caek. We went to every Argos in the city and they were all sold out of fans. It was so awful. I remember riding from Pimlico to Stratford to meet some friends after work and the trains were so hot that I was soaking wet by the time I got there. That wasn't a very nice couple of weeks that summer.

New place sounds great! Hope tonight's not too bad. Germany trip maybe in the cards sometime in the next year. I will, of course, let you know if that happens. My dad just got tickets for an Oct trip and they're really expensive right now. :/

Countdown to Alma Cogan (Noodle Vague), Monday, 22 August 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

I was so pissed. HOW CAN AN ENTIRE CITY (country) BE SOLD OUT OF FANS?! I think that week was the only time I ever stayed late at work and that was just to take advantage of the AC.

ladies love draculas like children love stray dogs (ENBB), Monday, 22 August 2011 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

Awww, how cute that I was complaining about 90 temps earlier itt.

Funny how the majority of gringos gtfo of Baja in the summer and rents drop to like a quarter of the high season prices, huh? And we're all, "we're from DC and Texas, we know how to beated the heat, nbd."

Fuck. Me.

No, don't, because it is TOO FUCKING HOT TO FUCKING FUCK just ask the spouse.

quincie, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 02:18 (twelve years ago)

omg do you not have AC?!

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 02:19 (twelve years ago)

We have AC, but electricity is muy expensive in Mexico (actually, it is probably priced correctly, and we are just used to artificially cheap power in the U.S.).

We broke down and turned it on in the bedroom last night, but I dare not attempt to cool off the rest of the house for fear of the electric bills.

The pool feels like a warm bath.

My hope is that I'm just going through a transitional period and that I will be dealing better in another week or so. Because we have a looooooong summer ahead of us and omg, SO HOT!

quincie, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 02:23 (twelve years ago)

I don't want sympathy, mooks, I want BEATED THE HEAT tips!

Actually I filled up my old-school ice pack (usually reserved for migraines and hangovers) to put at the nape of my neck; feels good!

Also: never cooking again. Got goat cheese, charcuterie, and olive for dinner. Spouse is cooking chicken wings on the grill because he is insane. He also went for a run today wtf.

i've never been very good at beated the heat, but usually the first thing i do is not move to mexico

mookieproof, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 03:32 (twelve years ago)

Alas, Alaska.

quincie, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 03:40 (twelve years ago)

* Freeze ice in giant blocks in tupperware containers or w/e and place in a bowl in front of fan.
* If there is any breeze at all, hang cotton or linen curtains in front of open windows and put the ends of the curtain in a bowl of water. Evaporation! Science!
* Fill house with plants, they might make it cooler? At least it will look cooler and smell like nice green plants instead of hot hot heat.
* Keep a spray bottle by you and use it to cover yourself in water as you lie in bed in front of the fan. Repeat every 3-4 hours when you wake up wanting to die.
* Die.

Do not try to move around or be alive during the day. Reverse your schedules so you only go out several hours after dark.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 10:24 (twelve years ago)

If your house has a basement, live in it.

Freeze a large bottle of water, wrap in a Tshirt, and clutch it to yourself like an ice baby.

More plants.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 10:42 (twelve years ago)

I will definitely be implementing some of these beated the heat measures. But to add insult to injury, southern Baja is a no-shit desert, complete with big cardon cacti and scorpions. This means a) it rains only a couple of days a year, leading to b) very little water available except of the salt variety.

What this means in practical terms: all of our non-drinking water comes from a pila, a big tank that costs mucho dinero to refill. Our drinking water comes from a purification plant and also costs mucho dinero. We are therefore hard-core water savers (you should see how I take a shower), so any beated the heat solutions that involve H20 also involve a cost tradeoff.

Next time I have a midlife crisis and move to Mexico, I'm sticking to the Yucatan rain forest.

quincie, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 14:59 (twelve years ago)

I wondered about that! Sorry to hear it. The only thing I had to go on was that you had a pool, and the rate of evap from that must be fierce, so maybe you had somehow solved the water issue. You could still use the "ice baby" and just refreeze the same bottle of water over and over? Plants, though! The amt of water they needed wouldn't be much and they're so good for the air.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 15:27 (twelve years ago)

(I may have taken some showers like that while our hot water heater was out. They involved boiling a pot of water at a time and taking it into the tub with me and mixing in some cold and slapping it over myself in patches. Only at the very end could I pour what was left over my head. Never going camping again.)

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 15:32 (twelve years ago)

You have all my sympathy, btw. It just went into like maybe the low 80s here and I've already vowed not to eat hot food again until September. Will subsist on hummus and grapes and cold alcoholic beverages until then.
