only has MIDI in...for triggering sounds or...better yet....syncing? That would be sweet.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 9 July 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

JUST LIST LOTS OF RAD MUSIC STOREAS?

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Monday, 10 July 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

there's an african drum shop in a sketchy part of gowanus (some would say Park Slope). It's on Union btw 3rd and 4th or 4th and 5th.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 10 July 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

i know that place.. it's 3rd and 4th. never been in but the dudes sitting outside building drums from scratch look pretty friendly.

note to self: buy thumb piano

fongoloid sangfroid (sanskrit), Monday, 10 July 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

My Zairean professor hated the term "thumb piano!" - "It's not a piano."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 10 July 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Mbira is probably a good generic term for it.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 10 July 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

The Mbira is usually classified as part of the lamellaphone family.

Confounded (Confounded), Monday, 10 July 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

i wish i had a gamelan in my house.
man, that would rock.

tehresa, who will here remain anonymous (tehresa), Monday, 10 July 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

maybe one day when i'm rich and fabulous i'll have a gamelan room!

or, world music room!
i would totally include an mbria. love how that thing sounds! should have taken the mbira workshop over the summer in 2004 :\

tehresa, who will here remain anonymous (tehresa), Monday, 10 July 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

A large number of lamellaphones originate in Africa, where they are known under the names sanza, kisanji, likembe, mbira, mbila, and kalimba. They were reported as early as in the 16th century, but there is no doubt they have a much longer history. The Caribbean marimbula is also of this family.

Confounded (Confounded), Monday, 10 July 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

theres a place on w 4th that has lots of imported instruments..but i'd assume its expensive, as its just off of sheridan sq and may well cater to the non-villager...or the west villager with money to spend

bb (bbrz), Monday, 10 July 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, marimbula is the big box you sit on (x-post):

i want to play a harmonium. never done it, but it seems like it would be an awesome party trick to have up one's sleeve (in addition to being lots o fun)

tehresa, who will here remain anonymous (tehresa), Monday, 10 July 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

oh so that's what that thingie is called (mbira)... i call it a gourd piano. i have one.

I always called them a kalimba. I left mine at someone's house though.

eatadick.com (Carey), Monday, 10 July 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

i am a tiny bit drunk and i want you guys to know it's called "mmmmbeerah"

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

If someone goes to that shop on e 4th can you see if they still have my Vox solid state 60s amp and Juno keyboard I put on consignment TWO YEARS AGO but who never called me. Granted I never called them, but I think they changed their number. Those bastards can never be trusted.
