Each visit lasted eight hours. The volunteers lay on a couch in a living-room-like setting, wearing an eye mask and listening to classical music. They were encouraged to focus their attention inward.

i wonder if my new insurance plan covers this

everyone should have to do this once or twice a year, yeah. or at least once or twice in their life.
i've never done something as extreme as the eye mask + classical music thing though. am i avoiding MAJOR INNER JOURNEY by running around in nature instead?

The whole drug culture creeps me out. Don't believe psychedelics are necessary. Exert one personal/spiritual discipline.

Quite possibly this is true. I've never done psychedelics yet I've already had a couple of spiritual moments in my (short) life which seem to be pretty similar to those my friends have had whilst taking psychedelics.

Still, I'd like to try some hallucinogens sometime.

he also wrote this really awful article about Buddhism on Slate that made him look kinda whiny and ignorant.

i wish i could dig up this excellent interview with a zen scholar (i want to say suzuki?) where he's asked about enlightenment and lsd culture in the '60s. he kind of shrugs off the question and says he has no problem with it, but that in a way its "cheating".
